Can I ask are the vehicles with the 'scream' issue tuned?

Yes . Tuned. I was running a remap with standard intercooler for a while. I tend to drive it reasonable hard and am wondering whether the turbo has just got too hot at some point causing a slight warp, enough for a small gasket leak. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Only noticed mine yesterday for the first time. Had done a 30 min motorway drive, then got caught in heavy stop start traffic, where I first noticed the noise. It would make the noise every time I reved the engine, stationary, or pulling away. I then drove home about 15 mins along dual carriage way, and noise was much less by the time I got home to look for it. This am, no noise on start, 20 min drive, no noise, leave for 1 hour no noise, return 20 min drive, got the noise back, but quieter than when first heard. But engine would have been much much warmer then.

What's people thoughts on a repair.
Mine has warranty on it from Land Rover, so do I 1 - take it to main dealer, point out problem, and loose my work vehicle for a period of time. 2 - phone LRA, demonstrate problem, and let them sort. 3 - just buy Nak gasket fit. If a main dealer repairs, do they just fit a new but standard gasket? Or do they fit new turbo or manifold any thing else? Andy |

If it's a warped manifold then a standard gasket fitted by the dealer could go again. This is the sort of thing that goes back and forth to the dealer to get sorted. I'm going for option 3 and sorting it myself with a Nak gasket. Might be a lot less hassle and only £20 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Warranty claim all the way. And I would also buy and supply to LR the naka gasket to use instead of the OEM one. May as well fit the uprated gasket if the dealers remove the turbo. |

Great thanks for the feed back
I have brought a new gasket, but whilst looking for noise noticed turbo heat shield is split, and broken around stud, and heat shield for crank sensor is wafting about. So am thinking of going for a warranty claim. But not sure, don't like people touching him Andy |

When i got my puma 6 months and 7500klms ago,i knew it had an issue with the exaust,at first i thought it was like the Td5 wraping "thing" but the wraping is taking place at the turbo side flanges and not at the cylinder head side!
Previous owner left the puma to specialist last summer to address the issue where he was told that the exaust manifold was cracked,he took it to a welder and refitted the whole thing. I think that the garage told him bulls..t,especially from what i saw from the work quality when i removed the manifold myshelf. In the meantime i had fitted a nakatanenga gasket, the fix lasted for about 4000 klms, then one stud from the turbo broke and then a nut went away and left the turbo hanging from one nut. When i bought the puma i found a manifold on ebay and i took it so now was time to dismantle everything and fix it for good. Beware!!The manifold i recieved was from a transit(i discovered it 6 months later ),the egr side exit is square on transit engine and round in defender version, one more part in the trashcan... I removed the manifold.. I am not sure there was a real crack there.. The retaining bolts removed from the head.. Somebody was in a hurry when refitted the bolts,i was lucky enough and with two passes with a suitable tap, the threads in the head "resurrected",fitted new bolts and special studs and nuts to the turbo side. I dismantled the turbo in order to send the cast iron part to a lathe,so i took the chance to clean the vanes.. Afterwards.. Total cost 40 euros and about 3 hours. Conclusion.. If you had exaust leak and garage tried to tigten the nuts to cure it,there is a big chance the studs will eventualy break (from flange wraping and unevenly tightening the nuts combo),if you are on the early stages the thick flange will cure the problem. |

If you have an assistant it's easier. You remove the heat shield, you undo the 3 nuts holding the turbo(medium difficulty),you undo the 2 of the 4 nuts from the catalyst-downpipe and one nut from the top of the manifold that retain a brace that supports the weight of the turbo, the oil feed and oil return pipes have enough "slack" so you can lever the turbo away from the manifold and remove the old and fit the new gasket. I did it myself but if and assistant is doing the "levering" thing, you can do it ultra easy.. Also fit some new special nuts for turbo application. |
