BP ultimate especially is more expensive than regular diesel, contains more additives of course (do we need them?) and believe also a higher percentage of bio-diesel. I have read several tests which tried to compare fuel consumption of same cars with regular diesel and with these more expensive Ultimate, etc. Conclusion of each test...... A waste of money, use the cheapest available diesel is the advise. Now, with our Defenders Land Rover are saying clearly that the engine is adjusted so that the car can run on poorer quality fuels (often higher sulfur content) which often are the only ones available in Africa or in the East. So with us here in West Europe having probably avail to the better qualities anyway, why pay for those premium fuels. In my particular case, 90% of the time, at home, I use regular French supermarket chain diesel, and the car has been running fine on it for 50k km. The times that I travel and use diesel of premium brands (never their Ultimate stuff though) I have not noticed anything different.... That engine makes the same sound, runs the same,..... so will stick to the supermarket brands. You never actually own a Defender. If I owned an Enzo I might consider using BP's Ultimate or whatever is the equivalent for petrol. On a Defender, no way.
I have never had a problem sticking to "normal diesel" and never had a problem because I don't stick two stroke in either. Fill it up with whatever diesel is at hand, drive it and enjoy it. Don't put petrol in it though, I tried that but it didn't like it! Nick 2.2 110 Tipper |

Although I may be a little biased, I would recommend BP Ultimate but only every 4th tank AND buy it from a garage that sells lots of Ultimate. A mate from work had problems with his VW directly after buying an "old" batch of ultimate.
It's got great cleaning chemicals in it and that's exactly why you don't need it every tank I also add mineral 2 stroke, but every other tank... |

BPMan, is there scientific data to backup the claims of these ultimate fuels. Not marketing bumfph but real data from cars driving about. I am not questioning your comments or wanting to get in a ding dong but over 100K+ mileage experience in Defenders tells me these cleansing agents are just not needed. My experience aside, think of how many millions of miles have been driven by diesels around the civilised western world without the need for Ultimate fuel, and now it's out everyone is recommending it. I can't get my head around it personally and see it up there with snake oil and carbon fibre parts for "lightening the load" Nick 2.2 110 Tipper |

probably somewhere on the BP web site there will be some blurb, might be worth googling it. As well as my land rovers, I also drive a 1.6 tdci (ford) it has a MPG guage, regular diesel I get 52-54 mpg, with Ultimate I get 56-59mpg .. so there is something in it.. also, the way diesel is blended now is different because they add a percentage of bio. Might be a dumb question but how do you know which garages are selling more of the stuff versus it sitting in the tanks?

I use Ultimate fuel nearly every tank now, it would be every tank but the garage I use, frequently runs out of the stuff. There are benefits from using any high cetane rated fuel simply for the quick ignition and smooth burn. Low cetane fuels are slow to ignite and burn to quickly which results in reduced performance, excessive engine clatter and vibration. Ultimate and v power both have a high cetane rating and both fuels include anti foaming agents, anti corrosion inhibitors and injector cleaning agents which stop the build up of carbon on the injector nozzles.
And for me, the Puma runs better on the BP stuff compared to Shell and the others. If I have to use supermarket fuel then I add 2SO simply for the extra lubrication it supplies to the fuel system, something the ultimate seems to do as standard. And every six months I also add Forte diesel treatment to the tank as it is a more concentrated cleaning agent. |

BP ultimate is not available here, I use a little 2SO mineral. Without any doubt it makes the engine much quieter and smoother. I cannot comment on economy, that was n't the reason for Defender ownership.

The reason for adding 2SO to the fuel in the first place was to replace the lubricant that was naturally present in diesel fuel until the newer low sulphur fuels appeared on the market. The main lubricant in the older fuels was sulphur.

Yes this is quite correct We here are now down to @ 50ppm sulphur. I do appreciate the added refinement that the engine seems to display. I assume the cetane level is increased. Normally I fill the tank with BP, the other vendors advertise Bio is added which I avoid. |

Yep, I notice the BP Ultimate better over the Shell. I can't get it easily around here so I get the standard Texaco diesel and add a bottle of Barnes or Wynns fuel treatment every fill. Much quieter TDCI and it increases the cetane index.
