Not scientific but my two pennyworth.
Did a 125 mile run up to Milton Keynes (and back)yesterday and had put in a bit of Ultimate as it was the only pump free and was in a hurry before trip, performance seemed a bit more sprightly on the motorway, on the way back filled up with regular diesel and 'thought' it was a bit less in performance. Hard to quantify but it felt 'better' Also had the same on a trip to Scotland a couple of years back on the 200tdi 90 - filled up with ultimate and noticed that it did a calculated 33mpg instead of the usual 29mpg (I was on holiday so was calculating fuel consumption, just for interest as I was having a disco transfer box put in on the way back and wanted to see if it made a fuel consumption difference) I guess the difference in consumption was eroded by the extra cost, but just my experience. Think I'll try one of the additives and see if that makes a perceived difference to me. I don't live far from Wellington (cross-field ) Taunton's BP station is now Sainsbury's (allegedly the best suoermarket petrol & diesel of the big 4). We have Shell, but I don't know where BP is now. Which diesel is the most DPF friendly, now 2.2s have to have the thing? Found this atricle http://www.petrolprices.com/about-fuel.html#j-2-2 The attraction of diesel engines is they are safer in accidents, much less fire & explosion risk, & being less vulnerable to dampness. Maybe more important for older Defenders... Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender |

...also more resistant to Marders (martins) Around here, the little beggars crawl into the engine compartment and chew all the cables. Ignition cables are their favourite. I've only ever driven diesels Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

sorry, got carried away...
As penance to the topic - I have stuck to Aral Ultimate (BP brand) for around a year now. The other local choices of Shell and Esso seem to run rougher. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Why would that be ? Bio diesel methyl esters are chemicals not exactly a friendly blessing to your engine. There is a reason why car manufacturers, including LR, are specifically saying that their new engines are certified to run on max 5% bio diesel (=B5) content..... The bio diesel industry is pushing hard to allow B10 and even B20...... Similar story by the way with ethanol in gasoline. That stuff is known and proven to slowly eat away certain engine components (fuel lines, etc.) if cars are not used on a regular basis... Daily users ok, but don't leave your car parked up for weeks at the time all too often.... When it comes to its effects on engines longevity, not much positive has emerged yet abt bio fuels, but obviously this does not get much press easily. As said, and I have to correct myself here, not only BP Ultimate here in Switzerland contains zero % bio diesel, but contrary to the EU, ALL Swiss diesel still is 100% mineral diesel! Bio diesel never got approval here to date. That's the advantage of not being ruled by Brussels. The fact that my engine runs distinctly smoother on BP Ultimate (the Swiss, but occasionally French/Luxemburg/Belgium too) than on the previously used cheaper French supermarket diesel probably has nothing really to do with the bio diesel content in that French supermarket diesel which is B5, but with the fact that BP Ultimate probably indeed is a superior refined product. I presume that premium fuels of other major fuel brands would be similar, but I have no experience with it. Main point is, don't get fooled all too easily by the bio fuels lobby statements, and politicians all too easily have jumped on that band wagon too, although with the higher food prices, there is a change noticeable here..... Saying all this because my industry touches the bio fuels industry fairly closely.... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

At risk of being accused of bias , if you've still got the 2.4 then you could get the new BAS remap - makes all other maps (including the factory one) seem like pooh! I am seriously hard to please but after getting my bicycle stolen today at least I could get into the 110 and enjoy my "new" smooth and energetic BAS Defender Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
