I think these "premium" fuels simply play on insecurities of owners who are willing to pay more for a so called "premium" product. The ford engine in the puma is hardly a highly tuned sensitive race machine. It was designed for vans to blast about, stop start, long motorway, you name it. So all these claims about premium fuel being somehow better for the defender are (in my laymans opinion and not backed by scientific fact) total .
I have yet to see an independent study conducted which proves beyond doubt that they are better. When that study is done, I'll definitely take notice, but until then, its bah humbug to premium fuels and hello to the cheapest diesel I can find. |

Does anyone know if any of the premium fuels give a guarantee on the cetane number, other than saying it's 'higher' than the normal stuff ? I'm no expert but I've got it in my head that much over a certain cetane number (and not sure what that is) the combustion/smoothness/economy benefits are marginal.
Esso don't do a premium fuel, although they are not typically the cheapest on the block. Their 'Energy' diesel includes a detergent and anti foaming anyway. Lubricity may be covered by the bio diesel element, although 2SO seems to help. Not sure if 2SO or bio will address the anti-corrosion properties of the premium fuels . Cetane typically (but not guaranteed) on Esso Energy is 52 vs UK min spec of 51. That's good enough for me..... There are too many variables out there with UK fuel supply.... firstly the quality of the base fuel, then the percentage of bio blended (anything between 0 and 7%). Biofuels from memory tend to be mostly cetane enhancers, so the percentage blended will have a bearing on the overall cetane number. Throw all that in the mix and you can start to see why there's such a nationwide variation in peoples views on fuels, particularly at the cheaper end. If somebody notices or perceives a benefit from using the premium fuels then fair play. All that said though, as both a BP shareholder and ultimately a beneficiary of their pension scheme, please buy as much of their rather wonderful fuel as you can..... Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. You pay a bit more, you go a bit further between fill ups and performance is a little better - I have no data, other than my own findings over the past 65000 miles in the past two and a bit years! each to their own, but in this case, the premium fuel voters are simply right!! 2009 XS 110 Utility Stornaway Grey

Well, a month ago for the first time in history I tanked up with BP Ultimate as opposed to the usual cheaper supermarket diesel from the nearest French supermarket . I have always been a disbeliever of the value of these premium fuels, but one thing is for sure, I virtually immediately noticed a distinct quieter engine. So there is something to it after all. So I will continue using it even if it is only available to me here in Switzerland and not accross the French border where diesel is almost 20% cheaper than here. Just had another Ultimate refill today. Even if the price to pay makes me it may be worth to do so in the long run.
A .... I looked on the BP website where they give some pooptalk abt Ultimate, but could not see if Ultimate diesel contains any biodiesel at all. Does it, and if so, what percentage is that? I confirm I use BP Ultimate (every 4th tank) and I am a shareholder - along with most of you who are contributing to your company pension scheme (most pension schemes hold BP shares)

For as long as I can remember I've never really been fussed with any sort of 'Ultimate Fuels' I have however always carried a bottle of Millers....It definately makes a difference...not much admittedly but slightly better economy (not on the wallet as you're shelling out for the product) and also probably a 'perceived' quieter running.
