As you're in Switzerland, I guess you can use these! Illegal to use them in UK unless the visibility is less than 100 metres - which is of course about once every 5 years Round here, people with front fogs on (when it's not foggy) get stopped - the Police use this as a reason to pull people over for a spot check I guess it's either legal in Switzerland, or you get a lot of fog??? One of my favourite targets of vitriolic hatred is the people who use front foglights when it isn't foggy, and I totally support any initiative by the Police to pull over people who drive with them on when it's illegal. Having said that, there is a strong argument for fitting front fogs on a Defender, since the headlights are so high up, and, especially if you have upgraded the headlights, backscatter in fog is a real problem. If you fit a good quality fog-beam light above the bumper, it will be low enough to work well as a fog light but high enough legally to not be a fog light, and therefore, provided it is adjusted so that it cannot dazzle oncoming drivers (and a properly adjusted fog light - in dry conditions at least - won't) can be used at any time. A lamp becomes a fog light in the eyes of the law by virtue of the fact that its centre is 600mm or less from the road surface. Anything greater than 600mm is not considered a fog light and is not subject to the fog, falling snow, or seriously reduced visibility restriction. On a related note, why do people wire foglights up so that they work WITH headlamps? If you need a fog light ON, you need headlamps OFF. A lot of the morons who drive with them on all the time could be stopped if type-approval required that foglamp activation disabled the headlights. And please, don't get me started on rear fog lights, the most useless and dangerous idea since the man with the red flag was done away with! |

Not a lot of fog, but fog lights can be used legally when there is fog or in other cases of seriously reduced visibility, i.e. also with heavy rain, snowfall, etc. A lot of people here are using their front fog lights in combination with their main beam, but don't think police are doing much about it. I personally think if front fog lights are good quality and properly installed, AND ARE ADJUSTED SO THAT THEY DO NOT DAZZLE ONCOMING TRAFFIC, there is nothing wrong with using them. Too many after market fog lights are poorly installed, poorly adjusted. In that case police would have a point in stopping you. You never actually own a Defender. The big problem with using fog lights in the rain is the glare they cause off the wet road surface. I'm pretty sure that on modern cars fog lights are wired to switch off if main beam is selected. Not necessarily true for aftermarket installations though, I suppose. Correct wiring for front fog lights, and how mine are wired by the local LR dealer, so that must be in line with EU and Swiss law (which are the same by the way): You can switch them on together with the parking lights and also with the dipped beam. They automatically switch off with the high beam turned on. I don't think that the last one there is actually mandatory. For instance my wife's VW has original ex factory HID lights, but her front fog lights do not switch off automatically with high beam engaged. You never actually own a Defender.
