I have a 1.2 box in my 110. great mod. with 235/85 tyres it pulls really well (tweeked Td5)
However, If i refit my MT's, which are 255/85, it becomes a little overgeared. not undrivable by any stretch, but enough to make the clutch slip if I give it the beans (although I think my clutch is on its way out anyway) But for general driving on the 235's its much nicer, quieter on the motorway etc. |

I run 265/70/16 all the time. Tweaked TD5 also and love it as is. Would however like it to be quieter when traveling, (motorways etc) but not at all costs if that makes sense. Nearly everyone who has had it done says its worth it with a BUT. and here lies the dilemma, which is why I want to have a go in one first. I really noticed the gearing difference when I test drove a puma the other month, had kangaroo diesel as I left it in the gear when I would be in in mine. Found first too low and 2nd a bit harsh to pull away, but once moveing that 6th gear was nice. That experience made me realize how great my Td5 is. In my humble opinion the puma only beats a TD5 on its cruising ability.

I guess it also depends on if you tow or not. If you change to a Discovery transfer box 1st can be bit high for pulling away. I've got an overdrive that gives the best of both and possibly a bit higher geared for motorway cruising around 2000rpm at 60mph

I had an Ashcroft gear set fitted to my td5 110, the fuel economy is negligible once the cost of the gears is taken into consideration but the absolute main benefit is the reduction in noise from the transmission and much easier motorway speeds. I would do it again (if I had a td5) but the bottom line is that when you have reduced the transmission noise, you get to hear something else ... after all it's not a Bentley |

I have the 1.222 gear transfer box - makes a fantastic difference - but again I have a tuned Td5 so a lot more power to play with.
Not noticed a problem pulling away while towing, much easier, quieter at cruising speed, can still overtake in 5th gear. Would recommend it on a tuned engine. Would recommend a tune if not allready done. |

Still undecided, and thought I'd give this thread a bump
Only concerns is the added heat generated by running a higher gears. Looking at more refinement, not at MPH/performance. Any views/opinions greatly appreciated |

More refinement: yes, engine doesn't rev as much for given road speeds, so it's quieter
Extra heat? how? engine working harder? nothing that i've noticed |

I have read somewhere that is a concern about the temperature of the transfer box. But I cannot see this being an issue, the same setup is/was used in the Disco 1 & 2 and they must have been driven all over the world at speeds in excess of anything the average Defender can only dream of.
Also if temperature is really a concern you could fit a Roamer Drive transfer case cooling sump for £82 at Devon4x4: http://roamerdrive.com/ds_access.html |

I've got a cooling sump with a temp gauge for oil temp in the transfer box, I'm running a Roamerdrive with a tuned TD5 (190bhp with VGT) , driving at 75-80mph in over 30c temp on an Italian motorway for an hour the highest I see was 85c. Roamerdrive recommended high temp is 100c, driving at normal speeds (60mph) in the Uk the temp is normally around 70c.

I had a 1.2 t-box fitted to my 110 DC with 295/75/16 MT tyres and to be honest it was overgeared for my tyres as I struggled to pull away in first on anything other than a slight incline! hill starts meant slipping the clutch.
Anyway it went bang and took my chance to put a 1.4 in and its much better but at speed it is noisier quite a bit compared to my 1.2 on the 295s which were good for cruising at 85mph!
