AFAIK the switch will get warm and possibly melt.
also, 90/100s are illegal for road use. there are some excellent 55/60s on the market from Halfords (£10) thru to PIAA(£60) HTH |

Thanks, that is what I needed to know.
It is still legal here to drink rum out of the bottle while you are driving, so I doubt they will worry about strong headlights. |

Simple enough to pop a relay and beefed up wiring in the circuit to stop things getting warm! ... ,-------,

On my old 90 I used to have an ARB headlight loom (although they're dead easy to make)
in short, it's 3 relays (one for both headlights dipped bean and the other two for each headlight on main beam) There was a socket that the headlight plug plugged into, which triggered the relays (dipped/main), and the whole loom took its own power feed directly from the battery. So when you flicked the headlight dip/main switch on the steering column, the relays engaged, and they controlled the headlights. even with standard bulbs it made them "whiter" instead of the yellowy dull that they are. Funnily enough the headlight (off/side/main) switch melted on my 110 last week. I've knocked up a quick relay loom so that the main switch just operates the relay which in turn powers the headlights, but the dip/main bean still goes through the poxy column switch... I'll get around to making a full loom sometime. As luck would have it, I had an old Td5 bulkhead loom so I chopped off the healdight switch plug, along with the old plug from my melted switch, and made the relay loom literally plug & play (apart from a separate earth for the relays) should save on melted switches in future! |

It baffles me why LR still run the full headlight current through the light switch and dip switch on the4 Defender, especially as there is a (fairly pointless) relay already in the circuit. I doubt that there is any other vehicle manufactured in the world that does this!
Modifying the wiring to include relays for the headlight current is an extremely sensible idea. It also amazes me that the dip switch is such a piece of crud; every time I use it feels as though it is about to break (and two already have). The arrangement on my Disco2, which is 5 years older than my Defender, is superior in every respect. Maybe this is why we love our Defenders so much. |

I lived, worked and played in Santo Domingo (lived in Arroyo Hondo, worked in Ensanche Naco, played on the Malecon, Villa Duarte etc.) until 2001, weren’t too many Land Rovers about then. I added to them by selling and leaving behind my 3.5 litre V8 110 station wagon with twin fuel tanks, winch and bull bar, expedition roof rack etc. Probably still in use and, as you say, anything goes… Must return soon for another fix of Brugal and Seben-Up, the Jet-Set, Jaragua, D’Noche, Boca Chica hotties, cabañas… Peter |

Hi Peter, Boca Chica hotties? Cabañas? Why what DO you mean? Actually, I live on the North coast away from all that madness but only minutes away from the Brugal rum factory. I only visit Santo Domingo to visit the Land Rover dealership for my regular maintenance. It's tough living here but someone has to do it. Alex |

Well I know a bloke that has done this with 2 130's and not had any issues, the vehicles are used 24/7 so the lights are used on a regular basis. 130's have feeling's as well you know |

My dipped headlights were always bad, so based on recommendations from this forum I have experimented with various combinations.
A noted improvement came in fitting the Wipac Crystal (SVX) headlamps, and I ran some H4 95/100 headlight bulbs for 3 months but was disappointed with the results. (Blue tinted glass ones) After reading about the Osram Nightbreaker 55/60's I thought I would give them a try BRILLIANT - finally the dipped beam is what I expected it to be Get yourself some WIPAC Crystals and OSRAM NIGHTBREAKERS, you wont be disappointed. |
