So the pressure should stay high after the pump stops, and the pump incorporates a non return valve?
It’s bafflingly hard to find a clear answer to this on any forum! There is discussion here but inconclusive: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/td5...em.161412/ I can’t see how the pressure regulator would help- it just discharges fuel if over pressure. And the NRV in the filter head is optional and only seems to stop fuel flowing into the return from the engine assembly. |

Did you put additive in the tank because you were having starting/running issues?
The job is a pain but I would still change the pump. I had an Elise that would crank but not start - it was the pump My old Td5 went from first flick of the key to multiple attempts- it was the pump Yours might not be the pump but you need to eliminate it as a possible cause |

I put additive in because I did with another vehicle and it made an appreciable difference. I bought the defender recently and am working my way through it so thought I would give it a shot.
I have put a new VDO pump in. The old pump was probably original but worked fine. Both reliably output 4.5 bar at the fuel regulator. I also replaced the main relay and fuel pump relay with new narva relays. I have checked that fuel is flowing properly in all of the lines. The only other things I can think of are injector seals, the ECU not firing the injectors, some weird head blockage, or the fact the air bleed valve is fuel through per my other thread at https://www.defender2.net/forum/post1055263.html#1055263 The fact it doesn’t hold pressure seems strange. If someone has actually put a fuel pressure gauge on and observed normal behaviour it would be very helpful to know. |

Have you checked the impact switch located in the engine compartment near the coolant reservoir to make sure it is not tripped?.

Yes I did. When the inertia switch triggers it disables the fuel pump completely. So it won’t even prime.

I had similar issues with a Td5 disco that I worked on. Couldn’t get my head around what the problem was, and to be honest still can’t. In the end I squirted brake cleaner (lightly) into air intake. It ran on the brake cleaner and has since been fine running and starting for probably two years. Still confused

Perhaps you had trapped air that cleared on running? Had you been working on the fuel system?
Mine gets ignition on starting fluid but dies immediately as there’s no fuel… |

Nope. No fuel work done till issue, then swapped pump. Still the same. Swapped pump again each time testing pressure. Then brake cleaner away it went.
But not a solution for you then. |

When you tested pressure, did it hold pressure after the pump primed?

Good morning, stop by the Land Rover Argentina club and in the Td5 section there are many comments about fuel pressure, I seem to remember that "Lucas "made some comments on this topic

Thanks. This one?
https://www-landroverclub-com-ar.translate...r_pto=wapp I have put a pressure gauge in the fuel temperature sensor port using a t piece. Convinced the britpart filter is a dud. I have an allmakes bleed valve and a new billet filter head coming. Will anneal washers to be on the safe side. I will test with an AC vacuum pump before reinstalling. Also I put an ebay kayak hatch in for pump access (I have a 127L long ranger tank - hence non standard) Click image to enlarge |

Been playing with mates Td5 that he is having trouble with, and pressure drops of immediately after engine switch off, and believe this is normal.

Thanks.
I’m coming to the same conclusion. I have also noticed that when cranking pressure shoots back up on the FPR. Symptoms seem like air lock at head. Currently replacing injector washers and seals. Old washers and injector tips had a lot of carbon. |
