Hi Matt, I have finally decided after much badgering by my daughter to take on this project. I think the following items will satisfy her requirements and allow me to complete the task. why are the 4" speakers so expensive compared to the 5.25" or am I missing something? Head unit: Alpine UTE-204DAB £150 Sub: Alpine SWE-1200 8 inch Powered Subwoofer Box £165 Front speakers: ALPINE 280W TOTAL 2WAY 4-INCH 10cm CAR DOOR COMPONENT SPEAKERS TWEETERS S2-S40C £120 Rear speakers: ALPINE SXE-1350S 5-1/4"(13CM) COMPONENT 2-WAY SPEAKER £50 Aerial: ALPINE AN-DAB1 - Glass Mount DAB Digital Car Radio Aerial Antenna £15 Harness: CT20BM02 Land Rover Defender 2001> Wiring Harness Adaptor ISO Lead £10 Cables: no idea what I'm likely to require. |

I found stick on DAB antennas to be useless when there isn't a really good signal.
A powered splitter isn't expensive and works much better connected to the original wing antenna. Connects2 make 2 types, with different DAB connections SMA or SMB, make sure you get the correct one for the headunit. Those Alpine speakers listed don't seem to include grilles, they're intended to fit behind trim panels. You might be better off picking a set that has grilles included and all work together. |

Yes, those glass mount DAB Antennas aren’t great.
You have two main options, a DAB splitter with the factory antenna. Or a more robust, possibly better performing option? The Nakatanenga flexi which comes with a DAB splitter. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

So after a little more digging and advise from above I will look at a a powered splitter and I think I will look to fit The ALPINE SXE-1350S 5-1/4"(13CM) COMPONENT 2-WAY SPEAKER to the front also.

Hi,
The Alpine SXE-1350S don't come with grilles either. They do seem reasonable value for money though and have good sensitivity (90 db/w/m) so should sound OK in a non amplified system. Just budget for additional grilles and be sure they fit the Alpine woofers. I've fitted 5 1/4" speakers to the dash in both Td5 and Puma Defenders. It is more work than just dropping in 4" speakers. Be sure the depth behind the panel will clear magnet and basket of whatever you intend to fit. Remove the existing speakers at BOTH sides of the dash, measure and check. Heater ducts, wiper motors and dash construction can scupper plans or cause more work. There seems to be a lack of availability and stock of 4" component speaker sets with grilles these days. That's probably a reflection of where modern cars have gone and what most people are fitting these days. |

Hi,
Is it really worth going component speakers with tweeters v's coaxial it's not as if it's a FFRR, it's noisy as hell even with the sound proofing? |

Yes, hands down. Makes a difference. Especially if you have a puma and naturally mount those tweeters high up in the dash as designed, or if you're pre-puma and can mount them on the top of the dash in pods. You'll find the sound clearer, speach easier to hear. It's not so much the separation that helps, its the fact that defenders always point the speakers at the floor, which isn't such a great plan for high frequencies. So separating them physically allows you to get them to where you can hear them.

While yes having tweeters on top makes sound clearer and voices easier to understand, I don't think you get much benefit from buying higher spec (more expensive) equipment. They need to be decent wattage etc but it's not exactly a high fidelity environment a Defender on the move. |

Agree with that. As long as they're component speakers and half decent you're going to get a sensible audio quality for an aluminium box with about as many sonic variances as a washing machine doing a spin cycle on a cutlery drawer.

Just my personal opinions, we all put a different value on everything, and the effort to achieve it. Any good quality, 4" 2way coaxial speakers will make a massive difference over the standard factory fit ones. Especially as you plan to fit a sub too, 4" will be lacking without it. This might do everything you want to achieve. If you can be bothered, upgrading to 5 1/4" speakers will improve the bass. Either with or without a sub, as they work above the sub-bass frequencies. You might not think this is necessary or worth the hassle. Coaxial or component? My opinion, good quality coaxials can (do) sound very good. A high sensitivity speaker, say 88 to 91db, will work well powered just by the headunit. Even top brands make coaxials, some are very expensive. Rear channels. All the sound is projected forward, at the back of the driver's head. Coaxials are fine for this. A separate rear tweeter isn’t going to build a soundstage INFRONT of the listener. As examples of rear coaxials, I've got Focal PC130 (5") in my 110 and Pioneer TS-A1081F (4") in the rear of another car. Front channels. A lot of people would be quite happy with coaxials in the lower dash. They would however notice a difference with component tweeters on top of the dash, lifting the sound to windscreen level, the optimal listening position, instead of being down at knee level. I have Focal component speakers in the front of both my vehicles, but wouldn’t say you have to do this just because I have. (I'd probably not use Focals again either, at current prices ) Your daughter's 90 seems to be a run around hack for horse interests. (Sorry if it's not and I've miss understood) With that in mind, I'd fit a simple system without going over the top. If 4" coaxials and a sub aren't enough, it's not a massive change to swap the fronts for 2way components later. Lots in there, but hope it helps with the decision. To add, £50 to £100 per pair would be my budget for coaxials. |

5.25 in the front will definitely make a difference over 4”, but it is a little extra work.
I used these to simplify fitting a little, https://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/ct25uv16-u...ptors.html reduced the amount needed to cut away and to try and angle the sound a little further forward (but they’re for woofers, so not really necessary). If positioned well, they will fit with the raised part of the lower dash that the std speakers fix to, almost looking like they’re meant to be there. On the passenger side (Puma), one of the plastic heater pipes will probably get in the way a little - I used a little heat and gentle persuasion to move it aside a little. I also used the silicon speaker baffles to help retain some of the lower frequency sounds on the woofers. One last thing, I didn’t realise how much car HiFi has come on in recent years - my head unit (cheap KENWOOD) has a built in 3 way active crossover that you can tweak to suit - meaning each component has it’s own channel (I’m also running a Cerwin Vega under seat sub). Not quite finished installation yet but nearly done |
