On older axles, yes.

Hi Dinnu,

Long time no chat! My Defender has been "normal" for a while, hahaha. Now, there's some bearing-like sound coming from the gearbox in 1st gear and when I depressed the clutch before change to gear 2.

Do you happen to know the suffix for a 1991 TDI 200? My gearbox number is blurred, but I found out it could be a suffix E.

If it’s suffix E, do you know the Timken bearing numbers for each component?

Not sure if you have this information or have recorded any previously.

Thanks! Bow down

Sorry, do not know that information, but also unless you had it from new, it could have had a box change during its life.

On the Ashcroft website there is good information : https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/lt77/

Ok, thank you.

One more question: does the original engine oil dipstick come with 'L,' 'N,' and 'H' markings? I noticed that when I filled about 6.5 liters, the dipstick showed the level over 'N' and just slightly below 'H.' 'H' should mean 'High,' right?

I'm a bit confused since the manual says the capacity is 6.7-6.85 liters.

AFAIK, the dipstick was the same from early 2.5 normally aspirated till the 200tdi, so that is correct.

I usually follow the dipstick. The WSM could be stating a fully emptied engine, which is not possible during an oil change. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

N is Normal, but I would not be too concerned if it is anywhere between the L and the H marks.
Closer to the H mark will give you more time before the oil reaches the L mark Rolling with laughter 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
