Gents, my transfer case needs to be rebuilt, the vibrations/backlash/whining are starting to sound quite terrible.
While it's out, I was thinking of swapping the internals for the Ashcroft 1.100 gear set: https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/1-100-gear-set/ Has anyone else with a remapped (BAS) 90 2.4 done this and can provide feedback? what size tyres are you running, do you tow and how heavy is the vehicle? whats its main use. on std setup diff, tyres thats roughly a 200rpm drop in top gear.
i have a 1.003 in my 90 on an m57. 255.85s and 4.11s so diff/tyres cancel each other out. that works well but would go anymore. 1.1 may work fine depending on usage. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Hmm, not sure I have the budget for the central ATB. I already have the Ashcroft HD Cross Pin and Output Shaft kit, and both front & rear diffs have an ATB. Since my 90 is remapped, I often find myself trying to change up from 6th on the highway -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I run 235/85R16, I don't tow, and vehicle is pretty light, mostly setup for 4x4 trails. I just find the 2500rpm on the highway a bit too stressful on the drivetrain. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Not sure about the stress on the drivetrain, except maybe for the transfer case getting too hot and therefore degrading the oil quite fast. So the bigger sump may help to reduce the temperature. In my case I also wrapped a portion of the exhaust tube with insolation tape in front and side of the transfer case.
As for the engine at 2500 rpm, it wont do any harm and it will ensure high oil pressure. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

I believe 1.1 would work well in that situation. I tend to sit a bit slower around 2000rpm which is comfortable for me. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Thanks chaps, gear set ordered, and I've also added the sump extension to the order.
I really did not have enough to order the central ATB, but I will save up for the next time the transfer box has an issue -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

That’s really interesting, let us how you get on. Usually the complaint is the opposite with revs being to low when motorway cruising. Some even swap out 6th gear for the lower ratio transit version which pushes up revs further to relieve excess wear on the main shaft. WARNING.

Right, but mine is remapped + various other mods, so when I'm cruising on the highway, I often try to change up a gear from 6th to 7th 🤣 --

On my 110 (Puma 2.4) I have the BAS 165BHP map + BAS Hi-flow intercooler + BAS silicone hoses + modified Airbox. With the added power on tap, I swapped the transfer box 4 years ago for an Ashcroft one with 1.1 ratio (instead of standard 1.2) and ATB. Tyres are BFGs AT K02 265/75 so same diameter as factory fitted 235/85.
I do not regret it a bit. The 1.1 ratio matches perfectly the extra power in my opinion, improves the 1st gear that was too short for my usage (I don't tow), enables cruising "more quietly" on french motorways at 130km/h speed -limit here- at just below 2500rpm in 6th (vs. more than 2700rpm with 1.2 ratio). /Mat |

I ordered the LT230 bigger sump for my 110" Puma quite a while. Yesterday I "presented" it to the transfer box and now I am wondering if the exhaust pipe will bang it under severe vibration. Puma 110" SW

Blimey! What is the speed limit there? I don’t think I have ever got near the rev limiter in 6th. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |
