Mine was squeaky and fairly stiff. I did the following and it certainly helped:

Spend the £25 and fit the LOF clutch pedal spring. I did this last week after years of accepting it as the norm and the difference is incredible.

Thank you all for the feedback.
I read both links in detail again, after having read them last night. I'll have a look tonight after work. So it's normal then it to be this stiff? It's a 65 reg with 12,000 miles and not having a tow bar, clearly hasn't towed, hence being worried that something isn't right. I checked the fluid and while it's not 100% clear, it looks decent enough but perhaps best to get that flushed early. |

I guess the best would be to compare again with another 2.2.
And yes, the clutch pedal on a Defender is quite stiff. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

It should only be stiff when new for the first few hundred miles.
Lube the pivot on the pedal box and go from there, also check the clutch fluid. If the master cylinder is over ten years old I’d consider changing it. Especially if it has black fluid, which is the seals that are breaking down. I know I left a dealer once with a new clutch it was so heavy I thought it was not working as it should, but then it settled to normal. I wouldn’t imagine it’s air in the fluid as that’s more compressible. Edited* If the fluid is looking decent then that’s not so likely. I’d lube the pedal pivot and go from there, the slave if that leaked would make the pedal more soft I’d have thought. It might be that a new master is needed, it could be an issue there with the seals $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Thank you custom90
I'll have a go at what you described and will use the info on this forum to fill in any blanks in my limited knowledge My guess is that perhaps something has seized up what with the low miles and limited daily use it's had in it's past life. Now feeling a bit less worried in assuming I have a new clutch bill to pay for. |

I've opened up the box and all is quite dry in there. I've read some posts about adding a nipple and giving it some grease but it wasn't clear if this applies to the Puma. The side of my box has a larger rubber bit coming out of it. More interesting is that the screws holding the lid show signs that it's been taken off before.
Do I spray/lube anything here? Click image to enlarge |

Would a thought a bit of silicone grease sprayed in there wouldn’t hurt.

I added the nipple to my Puma, RHS based on your photo.
Likewise I just added grease once the cover was off… belt and braces! Spring also done.. clutch has changed from being heavier than a photocopier (34k miles), to a dream.. Night and day difference (and squeak free!) Shafski _________________________________________ 2015 110 Montalcino Red Utility "Harriet" along with Puma on I.C.E |

Out of curiosity, where is the grease going? There isn't much in there the box, on mine at least, doesn't have a a bottom so I would assume it's going to just drop onto the engine.

Oh yes, that is not good. If there is a nipple fitted just one pump works. But you can lube it from inside with the cover off as Daz mentioned, the pivot can get stiff if dry, there definitely is some lube that can go on there. Silicone, or k48 or something like that or lithium would be fine, won’t hurt anyway. I’d imagine it’s one of those things that gets a little seized if stood for a while, loosens up with movement like us. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
