Could also be a design issue....
welding the flange side and the axle pressing side, the way it is designed creates a stress concentration. Plus the different thicknesses will for sure create internal stresses during cooling. Which would mean all mig welded axles are potentially affected, only that the later mig welded Land Rover did something to have a bit less stress on the joint, hopefully they last enough. The dirty V on the axle pressing where the 2 halves of the axle pressings meet and where it joins with the radial flange weld does not look too good either. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Axles have been known to split along the transverse weld too.

I used to stick weld high carbon pipes from 6-12" diameter using 7018 1/8" rods. We welded the central cord and the 3 more covering half of the previuos cords. Std stick welding never failed, whereas MIG did not hold lets say 1/3 of the time. Theses pipes were sunject of impact axial stresses though (up to 38 Tons).
Anyway, if no spares available, a competent welder with proper equipment could fix this embarrasing issue. IMO. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

So LR will not replace them if they fail this way?

They have not, thus far despite the hard evidence. It would be interesting to hear any follow up if this vehicle were presented to JLR at a main dealer. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

It looks like JLR will do everything they can to avoid replacing a failed axle case at their cost., I.e say failure was was due to having different wheels or tyres fitted from standard spec from factory. I suspect if you have a winch bumper fitted, or 3rd party springs or suspension components they would say that was the cause of failure. This leaves you as an individual trying to fight a huge company to prove otherwise! A fight you will never win. Appalling, but this is how JLR operate, even the brackets are a cynical ploy to play lip service to the EU and UK authorities. They don’t stop the failure and do almost nothing to stop loss of control and potential loss of life, injuries and damage. The only way to get this issue resolved is for the UK and EU authorities to step in and force JLR to properly address this issue, however it seems they have no appetite to do so. Unfortunately until there are deaths, the press get involved , and it becomes a political hot potato similar to the post office scandal, nothing will happen. |

In the absence of hard evidence to the contrary, I imagine JLR will maintain that this axle broke when the vehicle hit the wall, and dispute that it hit the wall because the axle broke. Either that or JLR has no liability because it isn't in the recall range or because the radio has been upgraded or similar.
I expect JLR to go to considerable lengths to explain why it is nothing to do with them. It will be very interesting to hear what happens next wit this, although from Oldowner's post I get the impression that it is to be repaired outside the JLR chain. |

It is actually impressive how the weld separated completely and the bevel is perfecly intact on the uper half of the axle casing.
I think even JLR acknowledges the Puma radio is useless and needs to be upgraded... |

Short of replacing the axle casing, is there a pre emptive remedy owners could do to prevent this happening? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If Oldowner is replacing the axle for a 2008 unit, the old one needs saving in case its any use for Payney1000 in his legal battle - I believe he has access to aerospace tech iirc.

Oldowner, can you confirm whether to the vehicle in your photo is within the VIN range covered by the recall?
Thanks. |

It's just steel any competent fabricator could add a bracket and significantly strengthen that axle, but that's not how it works as any modifications invalidates the type approval and you would need to inform your insurer yadiya... Rules and paper work gets in the way of common sense. |

Playing a bit the advocates devil.. but if you need to weld a patch on your chassis, would that also invalidate the type aproval?
I say with high level of confidence that a 2012 would have had the recall. Unless it was perhaps built on December 31 at about 23:58 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
