To keep in mind, this is not a warranty, this is a safety recall imposed on JLR by the EU.
If JLR called for the recall in a timely manner, surely you would still had the original chassis, and maybe the original bushes. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

on reflection I'd be asking for their reply in writing that they will not do the recall or further recall work & then be forwarding that to the relevant departments.

Recalls are there to deal with the legal liability for the car maker. In some class action lawsuit they can hide behind it.

For individual owners I doubt that if your wheel was to fall off your insurance insurance would refuse to pay out because you had not submitted your car for a recall. First of your need to know there is a recall and even then I don't think it is legal obligation to submit your car for a recall. Likewise you can sell a car with outstanding recalls. Hell most people don't even know what a recall is as the majority gets addressed by the manufacturer on regular servicing on NEW CARS without the Owner even knowing.

The likelihood of your wheel falling off is also quite slim, there is still a statistical spread of failure with the vast majority of the axles never failing, with some getting some serious off-road abuse. One can also argue that the weakest of the weakest have already failed.

The brackets provide some security, but don't stop failure. If you want more peace of mind buy an old axle and swap over the parts (if you want to) and change it out. I have purchased axles on ebay and rebuild them before not really hard or expensive at all. You could get a local mechanic to do that in a day.

I was about to say the same thing, nothing to do with the chassis.

Also I really can’t see what difference having polybushes fitted makes as all they have to do on each side is remove two nuts, slide a bracket on, then refit and torque up the nuts. They don’t have to touch the bushes.

If they were rubber bushes, would they check they were LR or aftermarket ones , and if aftermarket refuse to do the work !

As long as the aftermarket parts are certified to be used on your vehicle they are ok, LR are not allowed to force you to buy parts from just them.

From a legal standpoint I don’t think they can refuse to do the work on the grounds they have stated.

Perhaps contacting another dealer and getting them to do it would be the solution.

I had thought about doing this, but most of the main dealers within a reasonable radius do not seem to care about anything except selling me a new vehicle!

I have to keep this 110 in perfect condition, it will probably be my last one, (that's why I recently spent so much on it), & I'll probably 'go out' in it for my last journey as there's no other way down my track!
Thanks guys, you've given me several good suggestions. I will try & compose another email to my local dealer, & also sound out the dealer that I originally purchased it from.

I already have it in writing, which is why I am now in this crazy situation! I will press on...

I fitted these brackets some time ago, way before I received the letter from JLR. I have called my local Marshall LR Dealer twice now to ask them update the online records, but this has still not happended, and I doubt it ever will through them. When I spoke to them to let them know I had already got the brackets, they didn't know what I was talking about and couldn't have been less interested if they tried. Most disappointing.

I have looked online, JLR Online Service History site etc but I am unable to find out how to update the records any other way. Does anybody know how to do it?

I've now replied to the dealer again, in regard to the 110 'not having a standard chassis' therefore refusing to do the recall.
Having spoken with Marsland, I am now confronting the dealer with the the fact that the replacement chassis is indeed OEM.

The dealer also mentioned that 'the bolts won't fit'. I have countered this with suggesting that 'any competent mechanic' should be able to source an alternative bolt, if that is really the case.
Meanwhile, I have contacted the original dealer that I purchased the vehicle from, & am awaiting a reply.

^^ I'd be inclined also to ask for a written explanation of how your replacement chassis and other mods reduce either the likelihood or the impact or both of the axle weld failing, since the only justification for not carryout a safety recall is if it is unnecessary. Your axle is just as dodgy as it ever has been, and your modifications have not made a blind bit of difference.

Further I imagine that even if your radius rods have polybushes the bolts are standard, so the "fix" (if it merits that term) to mitigate the impact of failure will still fit in the usual way.

I also might be tempted to ask for an acknowledgement that refusing dealer will accept full liability for direct and consequential losses and claims should your axle fail after it has refused to carry out a safety recall as directed by JLR. This won't do any good but might give them pause for thought.

Good luck with whatever path you take.

looking at the picture TJ101 posted 10 dec 2014 ? - the brackets fit between the outside of the hockey stick brackets and the outside of the swivel joint flange.

What has the dealer been smoking to say the bolts won't fit because its been polybushed?

These LR dealers don't deserve to be in business.

Thanks Blackwolf & Ickle,

I'm awaiting a further reply, which I'm unlikely to receive, but if I do, in my next message to the dealer I shall incorporate Blackwolf's last paragraph,- and I entirely agree with ickle, I cannot see how any of my upgrades can have any impact on fitting the rather dodgy brackets!

I am also still awaiting a comeback from the original dealer from whom I purchased the Defender.
The amount of time I have spent on trying to get dealers to understand the most basic of technicalities...

I've been working with engines & general car maintenance for 60 years, I don't understand why the main dealers treat their potential customers as idiots.
I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that the dealer gave me a signed-off declaration that the work had been done! I would go to trading Standards, but (a) They're about as good as a chocolate teapot, & (b) as I've not actually handed over any cash, nothing has been traded. I've been down that road before with safety issues, & TS have failed every time to do anything about the problems.

I dread to think how many man-hours I have now spent trying to get this recall work carried out...

So having sent yet another email to my local main dealer, whom I now name, out of sheer contempt -
Hatfields, I have not yet received a further acknowledgement.
I therefore decided to contact the dealer from whom I purchased the vehicle. After quite a long discussion, where I perceived that they did not want to get involved, they did offer to look at the vehicle, on the understanding that as I have a replacement chassis, they might not be able to do it.

I tried several other dealers, but preceding the actual detailed enquiry, I asked a simple question: " Do you actually have an in-house, on-site team of engineers/mechanics that carry out your maintenance work?"
I got non-committal answers, the best being from an automated on-screen chat, where I was told that "they would look into it, & that they were glad to have been able to help" "Is there anything else we can do for you?!

So I went back to my trusted local garage, - who do the things that I am unable to do on the Landy.
I asked, if I obtain the brackets & they fit them, can they then register the completion of the recall on the JLR website?
They didn't know, but will look into it, but possibly not.

It's about time that someone from JLR took an interest in what's going on in the real world, instead of just selling new expensive shiny toys to people with exceedingly deep pockets!
They've completely forgotten their LR heritage, & all that Maurice Wilkes was trying to to when he designed the Series 1, for use with people like me in extremely rural circumstances!
There, I've had my rant!

If it's of any help with referemnce to your indy garage updating online records, I spoke to several dealers yesterday plus somebody in customer services via the LR Online Service Record site, and explained that I had the recall issue addressed some time ago before I received my letter, with genuine LR parts (supplied by Duckworths) by my local indy specialist. They all said that unless an official LR Dealership had fitted the parts, the online Recall cannot be changed and registered as completed.

They suggested I take it to a dealer for them to 'have a look at and check it has been done correctly' Rolling with laughter . I explained that from past experience when it has gone to a dealer it has come out with more problems than when it went in with, so I am not keen on doing that. Their answer to that was simply, Oh, is there anythng else I can help you with! Unreal.

Quite where that leaves me and many others I suspect I don't know, but at least I have them fitted (correctly!!). Neutral

A few years ago BMW had recalls on the e46 for airbags, drivers and passengers.

My race car was issued a recall, I called the dealer told them the car did not have airbags anymore due to race car. They just said ok, and updated my car on the recall list.

Now I also have had issues with LR dealers for my discovery 3 that needed a new torque converter tool them about 10 tried to eventually say torque converter but they needed to also change the gearbox and transfer case (warrenty so no problem) but then the next weekend a hose burst and lost all collect, garage that picked up car (another dealer) said issue was due to the hose had been installed incorrectly. Original dealer insisted that they did not touch the hose in question even though the repair manual says it needs to come off to remove the gearbox. After that they told me never to darken there doors again. And I did not, car was sold a few months later. My defender has never seen a main dealer. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Thanks to all for your latest thoughts & input on this seemingly never ending saga.

Well, my local dealer has just replied to my last email.
They say that JLR will not allow the fitting of these brackets where additional parts are required, or where the vehicle is non-standard.
I have been given a number to call JLR on, where apparently I will be told the same thing....
So beware, if you think your Defender needs a new chassis, don't waste the money & time that I did, because you can never have any further recall work carried out on it.

Anyone wanting a 2012 low mileage 110?, new chassis, perfect running order....

Should I get a new axle ?
Crickey 27 pages on this subject Shocked

My recall for the brackets is booked for next week. Yesterday whilst replacing 2 track rod ends I notice lots of axle oil loss from the very weld that we are talking about, on the bottom of axle behind the wheel hub. Cleaned up and sure enough this is that failed weld. Even though out of warranty should this well known fail point be replaced with a new axle considering it’s a recall on a safety item?
