I believe that you should but it will be a very interesting test. I'd be inclined to take it (very carefully) to have the recall work carried out to see what happens.

I wonder how JLR will react to this. The leak must surely indicate that the weld has failed in that spot. Will they tell you to drive it to a maindealer for assessment? If so they are telling you to drive with the signs of a major safety fail. When you get to the dealer and they see the leak and inform JLR, what will JLR do? Fitting brackets will not stop the leak in the weld. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Spud…. That’s the very point I’m asking.
So I went into the dealer today and made this very point. “The known failure point has failed, irrespective of brackets being fitted to the part JLR have known to be faulty and dangerous for many years, hence the recall on many vehicles” I was told to bring it in and a workshop diagnosis would be sent to JLR for their decision.
My question is… have there been any axles at all been replaced for the weld failure?

I may be mistaken but I seem to recall that the original recall (which is reproduced somewhere on this forum) did say that failed axles were to be replaced and unfailed axles were to get the brackets.

The brackets won't stop the welds from failing but should keep you alive if they do, so it would be interesting to hear from anyone who's had the brackets fitted and subsequently experienced weld failure.

Since LR has publicly admitted that the axles may be faulty it is hard to see how they could avoid replacing them, but if any organisation can find a way to wheedle out of it, it will be JLR.

So despite the axle exhibiting early warning signs that the weld is failing you have been told to "bring it in." Someone somewhere is not thinking this through. Advising someone to drive a vehicle exhibiting the symptoms of the issue that the magic brackets are supposed to ameliorate does not sound like good advice. If the vehicle went for its MOT tomorrow with the weld leaking oil, how would they approach it? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

When I drove into my trusted Independent 4x4 garage to report a slight oil leak from somewhere around the NS front axle. After cleaning off the area and examining up on the ramps - I was told in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't be driving the vehicle home!! So how JLR would suggest you drive into one of their service centres to get it checked out is beyond me. They clearly don't really understand what the issue is!

I ended up having the axle casing changed for an older discovery one with proper welding and all been well since (that was 2018). Having now had the recall notice, I'm waiting for my nearest Land Rover dealer to get the brackets into stock. It was booked in a month ago only to be told the day before that didn't have any......It will be interesting to see, when it finally does go in for the brackets if they notice that the axle casing isn't original.

That is very irresponsible of the dealer to say the least. I would ask them to either send a transporter to take your Defender to them, or a technician visit you where the Defender is located. No way I would be driving it in that condition.

As far as I read, some owners that had weld failures but at the time were outside the recall range got a small discount on an axle case. Now yours having the recall might change the complete game.

It’s interesting that they say there are no brackets available. 5 days ago I ordered both the left and right brackets from Jaguar Landrover Classic Parts, which I believe is part of JLR, and they were dispatched 4 days later. Seems if you’re paying they are available!
Out of interest I did look on YouTube what axle friction welding is. Once you see this it makes identification really simple with the two parallel beads of weld confirming a friction weld on axles. 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90
