The body is now in the body shop which will be 2/3 weeks so done a few things that dont need the project.
Installed the Focal speakers into the rear pods  Click image to enlarge Also arrived this week is the long awaited Tractive suspension system, which I'm really excited by. No, there’s probably 10/15mm clearance at best before you run into the heater box 1989 90 4.3 V8

Thanks Andy, Just about to say I've seen worse but not sure. Yes double Din, not happy with the way the unit sits behind the front panel so I've gently trimmed the opening and modified the brackets so that it sits flush with the front.
Still not 100% sure (not also sure about the gloss finish) but will live with it for a while, as you well know projects never really finish

HU looks very neat, how deep is it? When I gotten my full depth alpine unit it was really tight in behind, wish I had gone for a shallow unit!
I forgot about the heater being behind the gearbox sticker panel. From memory there isn’t much space to be had. |

The TracTive screen could be integrated into a custom double din switch holder nicely. Andy

Do you think the touch screen is something you might need to use often? And need to use on the go or only when stationary? Depending on use I'd personally, hide it away, maybe in the cubby or right hand side of steering wheel, somewhere discret, if possible. James

THREE YEARS OLD TODAY
I’ve reached a milestone, it’s been three years to the day since I first started this build thread. I’ve been thinking about how to mark the occasion. This thread contains over 500 replies and has had over 100,000 views  . When starting this project I found there was little information available for someone contemplating this sort of project for someone who has little or no Defender experience.
I’d like to mark the three year anniversary with my thoughts (and some stats). I would have liked to find these out before starting this project. Hopefully this may help if anyone is crazy enough to follow. Finances It’s always risky and difficult talking finances as one mans excess is another’s norm. But I really wish I had done a bit more work on budgets. I originally set a budget by looking at the market and got an idea of the costs from conversions from the likes of Wildcat, NENE, Twisted and others. I felt that if I set my budget around these prices, I would not be far off, so I set an initial budget of £75K. So three years in and I’ve spent a staggering and eye watering £163,799.96. There is no question that I’ve got carried away (big time) and been excessively extravagant, and that my lack of experience has led to many costly mistakes, some of the major cost are….
1. £15,000 on exhausts (Yes I had two ☹) 2. £4,500 long range fuel tank 3. £20,000 Engine and gearbox 4. £3,000 Chassis 5. £6,000 Trick diffs 6. £5,000 big brakes 7. £4,500 wheels and tyres 8. £4,000 original recaros 9. £4,000 YRM spend (guess) 10. £12,000 Donor Vehicle 11. £2,000 Winchester Gears 12. £4,000 XS bulkhead and other second hand LR parts 13. £3,600 Air suspension 14. £3,000 ancillary parts from the USA (FPR, mounts and other parts) 15. £7,000 shocks (yes bought this twice as well) 16. £10,000 paint (guess as final bill not agreed) 17. £12,000 trimming 18. £3,000 button and paddle shifters 19. £5,800 Electronics, ICE Dashcams etc etc… Currently I am at 320 separate purchases. Time I remember back in early April 22 and James (aka JOW240725) saying that I’m on the home straight and at that time I thought so as well, here we are 18 months later and I’m still not finished. I’m trying to estimate the number of hours it’s taken me and feel this will be embarrassing as it seems a lot, I’ve spent around 1300 hours (my guess) so far, not including the endless hours of research and reading, you tube videos etc etc However, this is my hobby and is to be enjoyed and I can’t believe how quickly the time has evaporated. I’ve also done an awful lot wrong and taken items on/off several time, reworked Ideas when they didn’t work and worked out of sequence many times, this has taken a lot of extra time (and cost). I decided early on that I was not going to put myself under any time pressure and some nights I do as little as half an hour. When starting on this journey, I voiced that it may take 2/3 years, in all honesty I felt I’d be finished in under two.
The reality is that I’m going to be closer to 4 years to complete this project double my estimation. Other things I’m mindful that most of you will understand many of these as your die-hard enthusiasts however these are some of the points that surprised me. I’ve had constant struggle with suppliers with the quality of parts, the customer service and the general difficulty in dealing with some suppliers, however I have also found some absolute shining stars.. 1. Onair suspension have been great 2. YRM have not only been good, they have helped me understand what I need and made specials where required 3. Turnkey Engine supplies (supplied the engine and trans package) still helping me even now the package is over 2 years old In my opinion the worst suppliers are.. 1. CEIKA Brakes – This company should not be allowed to trade. 2. Defender upgrades – Terrible comms, took ages to respond and very poor quality in general. 3. Most things bought from the states (except 3 above) – Zero support, argumentative and not wiling to help when things don’t work. When I finally sign off on this project I intend to provide a list of all suppliers I have used for this project. By far my largest and most pleasant surprise has been the help, assistance, comments and general encouragement I’ve received from the members of this forum. There are also several people who are a continual help and have over the last three years had a big influence. I’d like to close this birthday post by saying a big thank you for all your support over the last three years and I’m really looking forward to completing this project and meeting as many of you as possible in the following years. My final thoughts are 100% over spend and 100% over spend on time, no that’s what you call poor planning

Paul, I really appreciate your candidness around this. It is especially helpful as I find myself considering a similar engine and gearbox.
