United Kingdom 1996 Defender 90 300 Tdi HT Bonatti Grey
Puma to LT1/8L90 Restomod
Hi all,

I've been lurking here for some time, a couple of years ago a bought a N reg defender 90. I've really enjoyed owning it. I'm about to finish my last project (1991 Lotus carlton resto) and been thinking about my next project.

I've decided I'd like a full blown restomod...

LS3 (525 BHP)
T56 Magnum (I like manuals)
Air suspension
Big Brakes
Uprated drive chain
Interior
ICE

The works

This leads to two problems..

1. I dont know anything about Defenders
2. Don't really want to lose the use of my Defender

Hopefully you guys will help me with 1 and today I bought a 2007 Puma to solve item 2.

It's still very much early days and the project is still in the planning stage. I'm open to any advice at all, particularly not knowing anything about Defenders. I apolagise in advance for my silly questions, hopefully I'll learn quickly.

I've spent days reading through threads on LS3 builds but would be particularly interested in any build threads or other resources you think I should see or any general advice.

I'll post updates as soon as I'm more concrete on the build, but for now I intend to start stripping down the Puma when it gets here at some stage next week.

I'll post up some pics as soon as the Puma arrives.

Hats off to you! It sounds like it’ll be some project.

I’ll be following your progress with interest. I like the idea of a manual LS3, I’ve often wondered why the favoured option seems to be the auto. I appreciate that the lazy V8 maybe more suited to an auto box but it’d be a manual for me.

Also interested. That said never understood why the LS is a choice for the Def. They cant corner and are fairly unstable. No point having 600 bhp if you cant put the power down!!

For me ill be looking at the 3UZ. Instagram @defender_ventures

LS is the obvious swap answer, it’s the proven choice - nothing else has the parts and knowledge backup, they’re cheap, common, compact, light etc (and they’re not all 600 bhp).

My main driver for the LS3 is the knowledge base, my two main concerns right now are mating the T56 with the LT230 and the electronics.

And love the totally bonkers idea of 500+ BHP in a defender, guess I'm going to need lots of drivetrain upgrades.

Nothing set in stone as yet, so open to ideas.

Here is my puma donor

I was going down the t56 route, got put off in the end - T56 was £3.7k, the rebuild to make it work properly with a defender was another 4k.

I think M57 swaps are where it's at personally.

I was promised a 350hp, 600nm engine... think that's substantially more than a td5?

I would tend to agree with the others that there are a number of other engines worth considering. LOF recently went with the Ford Coyote (if I have the name correct) which produces plenty of power and I'm fairly sure bolts straight onto the MT82.

Personally, I've opted for the 4.6 Rover V8 primarily because I dropped on a new one very cheap but also because most parts are 'factory' and they're comfortably capable of 300bhp and 400nm, plenty for something shaped like a brick. [Edit.this seems to have opened a can of worms, sorry.]

Just ask Greeni how well his 90 goes with a 4.6 RV8. Cool

All that said, the LS does sound lavvvelly. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Still not finished yet but should be done in the next couple of weeks (did take me 5 years thought), did everything except the painting. Really looking forward to not having to spend my life looking for super rare parts.

My td5s 230bhp and 530nm. Bigger airbox and theres scope for ALOT more. So no not worth it, if you doing an engine swap go bigger. Instagram @defender_ventures

Tbh, I don’t think I need much more from my defender than a m57, it’s a 2.4 with hybrid abs suitable map, just would like that little more..

I already have 1 car that tries to kill me, dont need another
