2kw is the normal heater size for a defender as you can run it up to full speed to keep from sooting, others have fitted the 5kw and found that more than ample. We have had 2kw heaters and have found that enough for us and often run them overnight on low to keep the chill off in winter.
The 5 and 8 kw heaters are much bigger than the 2kw; which fits nicely under the seats or in the under cubby box units. Power and fuel use are not too much of an issue with any of these units, however you must be carful not to block the hot air outlet as this may melt or damage clothing and jackets (... ask me how I know !! ) The price of them has come right down now so well worth the upgrade for anyone thinking of fitting one. Fuel is easy to use the main filler hose with a scavenger line that works very well and does not disrupt the fuel system of the vehicle, plus will not drain the tank if used for a long time. Exhaust should aim to the opposite side of any awning you may fit and above the lower point of the chassis to prevent fouling when off road. Air intake for the heater should be out side of the vehicle pointing to the opposite side of the exhaust. Fuel pump mid way between the tank and heater on the chassis is best with a slight upward angle .. hope that helps Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

For fuel TD5 in tank pump is prepared for connection. Just ad "needle" in the prepared port. It was designed for fuel burning heater. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Wyvern - Thanks for all the detail. I was tempted by the larger capacity as they're cheaper, but have now gone with 2Kw.
I'm not altogether clear what you mean by 'Fuel is easy to use the main filler hose with a scavenger line that works very well and does not disrupt the fuel system of the vehicle, plus will not drain the tank if used for a long time.' Do you mean just push the skinny heater fuel line into the side of the filler pipe and into the tank? MadTom - I found this image. Do you mean connect/push the heater line into no.1? Click image to enlarge Thanks both. Everything's a hammer. |

Thanks, that all makes sense now.
I'll probably save the cash and bridge into the fuel pump as I already have an access panel. I'll make a plan when the heater arrives. Or maybe this.... ....with credit to tatra805 Everything's a hammer. |

Yes, the no. 1 is the right connestion port. I made it to our Discovery 2 long time ago, and last year to Defender 130. Discovery 2 has original hatch over the pump, with 130 it was with removed tub. Just set the fuel needle in tank to correct length, not too deep. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Thanks for clarifying that.
All made sense once i removed the ‘access hatch’. Click image to enlarge Is there an appropriate length of fuel line to insert? So far there appears to be no limit and I assume it’s just curling up in the bottom of the tank. Really ought to have taken a look underneath whilst planning the heater location. There’s a rather inconsiderate 50 x 50mm box section right where I don’t need it. Click image to enlarge Thanks Everything's a hammer. |

I was usin rigid needle in tank (copper or stainless tube), not just flexible pipe. Wegasto has some good manuals on web. Function of heaters is the same, differences are in connectors or control panels. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

MadTom - thanks for the advice. I’ve abandoned the flexi fuel pipe and used a metal piece as you suggested. I’ve left it about 3cm from the bottom of the tank, but no idea what that means in terms of fuel or driving range.
Left the heater for a bit to work on what’s looking increasingly like a sauna. Rock ‘n’ roll bed works surprisingly well and cooker, sink, fridge now mocked up. Direct to ground or catch tank? Thanks. Everything's a hammer. |

I’ve been rather busy on other things but departure date is rather looming.
A bit of an update on hole drilling day. Apparently it helps ventilate the mattress and offset the additional weight or neither. 😂😂 Click image to enlarge Also solid evidence of measure once, cut forever to fix the f up. 🤮 Click image to enlarge Everything's a hammer. |

Now with first coat of vanish. Front left still wet.
Click image to enlarge And then the wheels and tyres. Certainly need to get rid of the blue lettering and hopefully black centre caps will sober up the rather bling colour 😕. Click image to enlarge Everything's a hammer. |

Is that the inside picture of your Hummer, or is your lens making that look deceptively large?
Good progress. You know one day you actually need to go and use it |
