4RF RDS, Guy,
thanks both for your thoughts. I'll leave the dash in place on that basis but will do the sloping part of the bulkhead. I'll have a look at the transfer box for a reference, but assume as everything else is original this should be as it left the factory. Fingers crossed. Good to know the alarm is just the sensor doing its job. I went for the obvious solution which has left me without central locking, but I'm not going anywhere for a bit. Looking at the Roamerdrive fitting instructions, the gearbox tunnel has to come out, so I may do that also. Just need to rob a bank. Pete |

If you are taking out the transmission tunnel then it makes sense to butyl mat it whilst it is on the bench

Noooo don't plaster everything, only 30% of the panel has to have the sound deadening on it. |

Guy - someone did a rather good job of that trans tunnel.
What’s the object on the right in the photo of the Roamerdrive parts? Thanks for the advice on the transfer box label. Cleaned up nicely - 1.410 ratio. ![]() Click image to enlarge Now sorting postage with Robyn at Roamerdrive. Do I need the finned sump? What about the oil temp sensor? Shanecl - I’ve got 11sqm of butyl to use up somewhere. Thanks Pete Everything's a hammer. |

R380 turret The turret is not a necessary item, but Miffy's was worn so was replaced at the same time to make the gear change a little crisper. As for the complete coverage it was done less for sound proofing and more for heat reduction. |

Actually I just fitted the roamerdrive I bought 2 months ago (.. work). These are my findings:
Installation was straight forward. I bought a new timken bearing to avoid having to remove the existing one. Left the original race in place all looked good. Had the roamerdrive installed in under an hour. Then I fitted the extended oil pan after that. Oil refill little messy as always, you need a fair bit of oil. The fill plug that came with the roamerdrive is some weird size and I had no matching spanner so I just fitted the original plug back for now. Obviously filled the roamerdrive with oil as well. All good till it came to reinstalling that tunnel back. I hate that thing, l have AC which does not help. Problem I had is that the roamerdrive lever bracket is hard up against the tunnel. I have a mint tunnel and a raggedy one. As these are nla I decided to butcher the raggedy one to create space, then filled in the hole with the foam pad. It came out OK but I think that's a bit of a flaw. Or maybe my gearbox is badly offset to the left? Also as I have a LHD I had to turn the main gear lever one more notch to avoid it clashing with the Roamerdrive lever. Now for driving: It's glorious! No wining on power or overrun, no noises at all. The difference in engine noise at 90-110 kph is remarkable. On my car anything above 2200rpm is booming loud, with the roamerdrive you are well below that. Today I did about 300km with a camping trailer in tow and it was bliss. Still enough to overtake trucks comfortably and take reasonable inclines. On B road I found myself keeping it in overdrive and shift to 5th when needed. Certainly I recommend it, but I would like to know how others handled the gearbox tunnel issues |

Guy - thanks for the detailed photo. All makes sense now.
Texas Rover - you've answered my next question as a Timkin bearing is only £20, why not fit a new one? Much easier to revert to original if ever any problems. My question was around how the new rollers will interface with 90,000 miles of wear on the race. Terrific to hear that the installation is not difficult and it delivers on performance. I'm RHD with no AC, full poverty spec, with lots of space hopefully. Need to confirm shipping to UK (and get that bloody client to pay his bills) and its my next step. Thanks Pete Everything's a hammer. |

No problem at all
![]() As for the bearing race. If you are changing half you should change the other half as well. Or swap the old 90k bearing over to the new OD. |

Although I don't disagree that bearings are best replaced as a whole, as long as the bearing and race are in good condition I don't think it us an issue to not replace the race. First of they are not made as a pair, bearings are mass produced to a very high tolerance and just assembled and packed. Then I considered the risk of damaging the old bearing at removal, or the race for that matter. You would probably have to remove the transfer case to get the race out properly.
I just fitted a new bearing and kept the original race in place. The race and old bearing looked perfectly fine and it runs quietly. Obviously it is up to you how you do it. If ever mine starts to get noisy I and always go in again and replace the lot. With the amount of use the car gets, I don't think I will ever get there. |

A quick and not terribly interesting update.
I bought a Roamerdrive from one of the UK 4x4 suppliers who also advertise on Ebay. They advised the following day however that they would refund my money, as they don't have the product. It is still advertised however on both their sites. ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge In parallel I bought a new input shaft bearing and larger capacity sump which although gorgeous, now sit somewhat forlorn as I arrange purchase of the important bit direct from Roamerdrive. Sadly now with the addition of 20% Vat and 4.5% import duty. Death and Taxes. ![]() |

Don't worry about being short changed. I was doing exactly the same a few weeks ago. All UK vendors display outdated prices, no one has any in stock. The only importer is Britpart, everyone gets it from them and they have no stock. I am sure when they have stock again the prices will be much higher.
Sane story in Europe, I tried. The only way currently to buy is direct from Roamerdrive directly from Canada and they are great people to deal with. Cost a bum, but you will enjoy the result! Good luck. |

Good to know I'm not alone.
Unfortunately whilst waiting I've resorted to retail therapy and am now expecting rear wheel carrier, steering guard, ladder and wing chequer plate. Could be worse. Almost forgot I'm supposed to be fitting the sound deadening. ![]() Pet Everything's a hammer. |
