If only.

Surprised you couldn’t hear the cursing as I struggle with the trans tunnel x-head screws.

But then this little gem arrived from Canada.

Any thoughts on the tunnel screws?

They appear to be into plastic captive nuts, which may not respond well to an impact driver.

Thanks

Overnight WD40 did the trick. Surprised how grippy those plastic ‘nuts’ are. Trans tunnel now removed.

Looks about right, but anything visible I need to worry about/fix?

If I recall I had to adjust the position of the loom so the overdrive lever didn't rub on it. Make sure all the lever components are nicely greased.

It might be worth giving the whole area a good clean whilst it is accessible and give your LT230 levers a good greasing. If needs be you can adjust your R380 return springs as well.

Lovely bit of kit.

Your car is looking extraordinary clean! Looks like a good buy!

As mentioned make sure you adjust the wire loom, but I am keen to find out how your cover fits back. On mine the new lever hinge touched the cover, but maybe there is something else wrong on my car?

Guy - if I knew what LT230 and R380 were I’d be nodding wisely. Not the case unfortunately. Help.

Texas Rover - thanks, my only agenda was to buy original and I think I’ve struck lucky. Not sure the truck currently feels the same.

It does look very tight where the Roamerdrive selector fits in the side. So far I’ve not been able to move the two x-head bolts either.

Rather inevitably I got distracted by the easier bits.

Now with spare wheel carrier, ladder and steering guard.

Just need to fit the chequer plate to the wings then no excuses, on to the Roamerdrive.

Do I put anything between the wings and plate? I’ve seen suggestions of pond liner or dum dum.

Thanks.

Fitted the Roamerdrive yesterday.

Cross head screws on the end of the diff-lock shaft plate aren’t quite what they were, but are replaced so not a problem.

Took a while to figure out how to remove the existing shaft as I’d only removed the cover and not the ‘spacer’.

Internals are in excellent condition, someone has loved this truck.

Replaced the input shaft bearing as instructions suggest this as an option and it makes for an easy life.

I installed the unit from above using one of the mounting bolts run through as a lifting point to allow me to align the splines whilst Sarah rotated the rear wheel.

All torqued to spec when I found an O ring on the floor. Inevitably it was missing from the sixth of the six bolts I had to check, but happy to now have it in place.

Gear selector was simple, but needed relocation of a couple of cable conduits, otherwise all good.

Sadly I can’t run it as I bought the high capacity sump, but not the gasket. Big Cry Roamerdrive input shaft at the bottom of the photo.

Could also use some gear oil. Rolling with laughter Everything's a hammer.

Quick clean up then on with the new gasket and sump.

I think I have it the right way up.

Came up with an easy solution to filling the transfer box.

Doesn’t take a genius to work out what happened whilst I was happily pouring in oil from above.

Sarah’s yoga mat found a new life.

I’ll run it today if the rain ever stops.

Hopefully all good and I can get on with the sound deadening and camper build. Everything's a hammer.

Sorry Pete... Rolling Eyes The R380 is your 5 speed main gearbox and the LT230 is the transfer gearbox. Order is Engine, bell housing (clutch), R380, LT230, handbrake drum and on to the proprshafts.

No need to put anything under the chequer plate wing tops if you do not wish to. Some do, some do not. It is a personal preference.

I do not.

Nicely done that man. One thing... Get more grease on those linkages to ward off this winters road dirt/salt spray and corrosion. Thumbs Up

Thanks or the response.

I managed to figure out what's what, but came very close to draining the gearbox whilst looking to fill the trans box Rolling with laughter

All over the grease agenda and I've got the cover off the high/low shifter as I can't get it across to lock.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Shouldn't that have been EP90 or equivalent, rather than MTF94 going into the transfer box?

I thought MTF94 was generally considered unsuitable for the LT230.

Hi Blackwolf. The Roamerdrive needs a GL4 oil as the overdrive contains brass components and Land Rover stipulate a 75w90 for the LT230 in TD5s. 300tdis and earlier had ep80/90 in the LT230.

Just so it has been said, do not fill with multi-grade GL4/5 oil. Only GL4... Roamerdrive are very very specific about that.

The Lub oil to use for the gearbox R380, not the transfer case, is MTF94. About a year ago I changed the oil on my gearbox, which contained some standard gear oil and based on colour, smell, viscosity etc, I can't help but conclude that MTF94 is an ATF (automatic transmission fluid), which is what was previously required.

Very different oil from your regular transmission/transactie EP90, which is what is required in the LT230 (transfer case).

Btw the shifting in my transmission is now perfect, while before it was very poor.
