A pointless recall if it doesn’t cover all affected VINs
Mine was a 2009 110 DC when the axle went on the seam, luckily moving relatively slowly when it pulled me straight into a hedge. I replaced the axle myself as Land Rover weren’t interested. I now have a 2009 130 DC , obviously outside the recall but more than a little worrying . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Hard to believe the lack of interest from Land Rover when the fault that the magic brackets are supposed to ameliorate actually occured. Cannot have been a pleasant experience. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

So once all these brackets are fitted, then what ?
If or should we say when the casing fails, do they then replace the axle or by installing the brackets have they, as far as JLR are concerned done their bit ? There are certainly more than a few forum members who have installed the brackets themselves over the years. That will no doubt void any future claims . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

This is akin to a wiper motor failure and Land Rover giving you a cloth to wipe the windscreen...while you are driving. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Just checked and my MAR 2012 90 has friction welded axles which is a pleasant surprise.

If you did discover a leak in the axle case and you contacted JLR, they would probably tell you to book it into a maindealer for them to examine it. By rights it would need to be collected on a flat bed lorry. Imagine driving it to the dealer and the axle failed and you were involved in an accident with other vehicles. I doubt if your insurance company would look benignly on your claim as they would tell you that you were driving a vehicle with an obvious defect. Yet you were doing as the manufacturer instructed you to have the fault examined. I might be a little naieve here but perhaps Land Rover are planning for axle replacements to be fitted and are using the brackets as a stop gap until the axles are fitted, thus implying that they are actually being pro active. Probably NAIEVE with capital letters .... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Indeed a pleasant surprise. As I do not doubt your skill to differentiate between mig and friction welded axle casing flanges, I find this so strange. My August 2012 is mig welded. Maybe someone found an axle in their gray stock, and decided to use it. Damn, they should have discovered it 4 months later

I would think in a car assembly line you have different suppliers supplying parts purchased in batches and then they get consumed as they come in so you might end up mixing one suppliers friction welded axles with another suppliers MIG welded axle.
Might even be taking place on the axle assembly side of things. Then it would take some time to figure out that one supplier is not meeting the quality standard and soon you have a right mess up on your hands. Surely today's solution to that is to have a massive database where every component on every car can be traced back. Having personally seen the Range Rover and then Defender production line I doubt the defender line ever evolved to that level (lot of crates and men in blue coats) Last edited by TexasRover on 25th Sep 2023 8:15am. As far as I know, the factory for axles changed late 2009 / early 2010. That is when the switch from friction to mig welded was done as well. If the new factory was under different management or not (competitor to the original manufacturer), I do not know. But surely, mig welding required lower investment at the new factory.

The reference of the axles cases being manufactured in India was based on what an LR engineer had told Payney1000 according to one of the other discussions. Later referred to has a red herring, so yes to avoid confusion I will edit and remove reference.

Just got my letter too! Mine is one of the very last of the 2.4's, It's just past it's 12th birthday (i bought it new)
Better get it booked in I guess! Not been to a LR dealer for years! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
