I am only a newbie here but have lurked in the background for too long. I am certain this has been discussed many times before. Personally I have added two stroke in a ratio of somewhere between 40ml-50ml ( its never an exact science for me on a garage forcourt with two stroke bottle markings that defy my eyesight) per 10 litres of fuel, from about 500 miles. I have to say, its quieter, runs smoother, slightly better mpg and I have no hessitation in using cheap supermarket fuel.

There have been lots of thoughts on the above on this site. Just put it into the SEARCH facility and lose yourself for a week. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Yes Toplink thats a pretty famous thread and like all the best ones it ends up in a big bitchy arguement I think. But IMHO 2 stroke is the business for keeping all your internals clean. I never fill up without it Thumbs Up

The general recommended quantity is 1:200 to the diesel.

But when I fill up I just order a bottle and put it in, it's 200ml and by the time I fill up the truck takes in about 45L.

For the 2.4, Jaso-FB spec is fine, but on the 2.2 only Jaso-FC spec should be used due to the DPF. --

Rolling with laughter

I generally put a drop of two stroke in on refill as it seems to make the engine run just that bit smoother. Steve.

Nidge I use either Carplan (from B&Q) or Tesco motorcycle 2SO which are both exactly the same product from the same manufacturer just different labels. They are Jaso FB spec and are about € 7 for a litre bottle. I use 50ml per 10 litres of diesel. The only thing I have to be careful about here is the quality of diesel available as one of our local independants was caught selling the washed stuff so its Topaz, Texaco or Apple green filling stations for me even though they all use a variety of suppliers but at least its Kosher fuel.

Think you might need FC spec. for the Puma owing to the catalytic converter. FB will be o.k. for the 200 tdi. And yes the 2 stroke will make the 200 tdi a little quieter. Used it in our now retired 200 tdi and it had a noticable effect noisewise. Took the edge off the noise and gave very good emissions results at the NCT. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The big question is are there any disadvantages to this practice on a puma engine. Its never over in my land rover.

This question has been asked before with no definitive answer. The only proviso with adding the 2 stroke is a more frequent oil change regeime i.e. 6000 miles instead of 12000 miles. So long as it does no harm and if we are just wasting our time and money then no harm done. I have been using it steadily for sometime now and like I said before, I cannot prove that it is benefial but the Puma is very quiet. I cannot claim an increase in mpg as 29.** is as good as I get. As I noted in an earlier post the 1992 200 tdi sailed through the MOT with it's lowest emissions ever after regular doses of 2 stroke in the diesel. Have not taken the EGR out from the Puma to check how clean it is but one of the purported benefits of using 2stroke is that it keeps the EGR clean.
Rossy has great faith in it from experience with use of it in an earlier car.Seems the Puma needs the more expensive FC spec 2 stroke owing to the fact that it is fitted with a catalytic converter. Seems the FB spec. 2 stroke could clog it up.Anyway there at least two sides to this debate, plus those sitting on the fence. A truck driver did tell me that his truck, very modern and highly sophisticated, was designed to burn engine oil with the diesel. He did not know the technicalities but that is how it was. Taking this as a yardstick it will hardly do our engines any harm in the doses we use. I put 5 litres of 2 stroke (Castrol Actevo which is FC spec)into every 1000 litres of diesel when I fill the tank in the yard. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

FC is a must for the 2.2 or any engine with a DPF. I once asked my engineer buddy about FB and CATs and he reckons a simple 2 stage cat as is in the Puma will be unaffected by the slightly higher ash content in FB as it could in theory deal with a litre or more dirty engine oil being burned every 1k miles easily and that produces much more muck than 2SO which burns extremely cleanly. I'm going to be the guinea pig on this one I suppose !

The only time I have ever tried 2so the EGR went tits up and needed to be replaced. There has been quite a debate about 2so here in South Africa. No-one has come up with any scientific evidence that it is good for your engine - it's a more seat of the pants gut-feel reaction.

Not for me, thanks.

Interesting to hear of this bad reaction linked to adding 2stroke. Would'nt it be lovely to get a definitive answer either way. Any further details "rob" as to the time frame you used the 2stroke and the EGR going bad?Any info that helps with this debate is always welcome. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
