It’s a pretty simple choice between cheap fix(es) to keep the truck legal for the next one or two MOTs, or an expensive new chassis to keep it “alive” for the long term.

BUT, for how much longer will it be practical/sensible to keep a 2011 diesel vehicle? Already priced out of use in cities and larger towns, how long before it’s completely banned? I’m keeping my own 2011 2.4 truck for as long as it doesn’t cost me too much in repairs, but its value is diminishing rather than appreciating, fewer and fewer people will want to buy it, and I won’t be spending huge sums on it…

That type of flaking away where it is would warrant s look around rest of chassis. What's it like behind shock mounts? Cheers

I had to make this choice in 2015 when i was told that the rear half of the chassis was not good, as Millie is a keeper i went down the route of a chassis swap, i made the right decision as when we got to see the top of the original chassis, there was nothing left of it Shocked 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Hi

I would get a high quality welding job done in the first instance. Then I would take it to a professional rust proofing company who will clean and strip back the chassis and underside and have their top treatment applied. Then every year after I would just top it up with one of the many lanolin treatments that are on the market.

I'm guessing that the above will cost around the £750 mark and it keeps your Landy in its original condition.

Just my thoughts on what I would do in your shoes.

Given the OP is in Scotland salt is going to be a major issue if its used over the winter. I know someone who rebuilt a 90 onto a galvanised chassis and recently, despite it becoming a bit of a garage queen, has rebuilt it again and had the chassis regalvanised.

With that said and the quantity of salt the Scots put on the road I think you're probably looking at a replacement chassis in the near future, at that point unless you're doing the welding yourself or have someone friendly it's putting off the inevitable and spending money at the same time.

I think the main issue with a lot of vehicles is "lack" of use. My 300Tdi 110, admittedly in South Wales is still on its original chassis bar rear cross member and a patch behind the gearbox cross member. It's currently my only vehicle so used daily and kept outside the majority of the time. I've wax oiled it once, 10 years ago. However I have when the opportunity presents itself painted various bits by taking stuff back to bare metal first.

I've tried and been severely unimpressed by the Buzzweld products. Nothing, despite how the prep is done, has lasted 10 months. There is still some original paint from LR on there and holding strong - the rest has been scratched off from hitting rocks etc., offroad. Currently trying out POR15 and it's already lasting better than the Buzzweld stuff. Trailing arms, A frame, rear cross member so far.

Using it daily means that the salty grime tends to be washed off / replaced fairly often so doesn't have a chance to set in. Mind you I do go through a fresh water ford every few weeks which helps. Conversely the L322 which did Scotland a few Christmases ago and I destroyed my knee up there so it sat for a month after coming back had it rusting up underneath quite drastically. Never had that issue before so the lack of use and letting the grime sit was the main cause. Ed

Where do you go for rust proofing? Welding and rust proofing would cost at least twice as much around here. WARNING.

I'm in Bedfordshire and in the past have hired a coded welder to come to my home and make various welding repairs for £250 per day cash.

The previous owner had my current 2007 Defender 90 treated with Dinitrol in 2018 by South West Rust proofing. It now has 109,000 on the clock and the chassis is in fantastic condition..

In the past I have taken my Landy's to the local truck wash and they have hot washed / steam cleaned the underside for £50. Its then easy to see if any welding needs doing, easy to brush off surface rust and treat with converter, paint and then treat with the protectant of your choice.

Cheers mate. Broad Lane/South West did mine a while back but they are a lot more expensive now. It’s about £1300 to do a 110. I’ve just been topping up with Lanoguard but it may be time to think about a chassis swap. WARNING.

A coded welder for £250 per day is astonishingly cheap!

Having had to employ coded welders for pressure-vessel work on many occasions I am not sure if I would be delighted or terrified to find one who'd work for £250 per day (unless I suppose it was cash in hand and off the books).

The cost of rustproofing these days, I think I’d just put the money aside for a chassis, what you’d spend in 10 years paying for rustproofing and top-ups, you wouidnt be far off a new chassis cost. Plus you’ll never fully treat the rust with the chassis on the vehicle. Just treat it annually with Lanoguard or ACF-50 and accept it’s going to rust and trickle money away for a galv chassis, if you intend on keeping it.

That’s my opinion anyway.. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

If you are going to go a replacement chassis, For god sake, get a company who has a high rep, and knows what they are doing.
My parents were bitten big style by a local company, that was supposed to be bob on.
My dad wanted a chassis, and a new bulkhead doing, rear tub repairs, and respray also a couple of little things, like a heated windows screen.
They were quoted 20k, to me was very steep if you ask me. That soon spun out of control, bit style, and my dad ended up paying kicking and a arse off 30k! i am going to link the thread on here, to show you what he got for his money, Thumbs Up one word, they were going on holiday, the friday of that week it was collected, and this lot had my dads defender from december last year. full story here anyway. Thumbs Up

That’s the same conclusion I have come to. Even the very best rustproofing companies can’t fully protect a chassis. As this one is a keeper I figure I’ll be better off financially doing the swap earlier rather than later. WARNING.
