United Kingdom 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 SW Firenze Red
2.2 Puma TDCi Overheating and Coolant Depletion
Hello All

On a recent journey after less than 20 minutes my LR temperature went off the charts and power was cut. Easing off the the throttle brought the temperature back down and restored power, however, further application of power resulted in temperature going off the chart again.

Having limped home checked the coolant header tank to find it was empty. Refilled and took the car for test run - same outcome.

I checked my oil and cannot find any water or white deposits. Neither can I find any apparent leaks despite going underneath.

The engine is blowing more smoke and smells hot - exhaust smoke is grey in nature and there was a little fluid in the tail pipe but I believe this may be from condensation.

I do not wish to drive the vehicle further so will look to specialist to evaluate issue - possible pressure test the coolant system?

Will it need a vaccum refill using specialist equipment?

If anyone has experienced similar and can point to potential or probale cause I would be most grateful for
responses?

Your help much appreciated!

Kind Regards - David

Unfortunately it’s likely to be the EGR cooler leaking or a failed head gasket.

A specialist will be able to do do several tests but I suspect it’s failed head gasket.

Definitely get them to temp bypass the EGR cooler by removing the coolant hoses that go in and out of the EGR cooler and joining them together as a first test. The failure of the EGR cooler is a known problem with the 2.2 and the issue you have can be misdiagnosed as a HG failure.

If you search the net for “ IRB egr cooler” you will see a Facebook post and video of the issue from IRB developments, a site sponsor on here.

If it is the EGR cooler then it’s a significantly easier and lower cost issue to address so well worth testing that first.

Will do Ian - thanks for the insight.

I have not had any problems with the LR other than a worn Intercooler so fingers crossed it is not the Head Gasket.

Hopefully it’s just the EGR cooler 🤞

The intercooler splitting at the crimped seam is a common issue on the 2.4 and 2.2 so not unusual. Mine split at circa 60k miles so replaced with a BAS IC which should outlast the rest of the vehicle as it’s so well made.

An update after numerous tests, and ruling out the EGR, diagnosed as Cylinder Head Gasket.

Sorry to hear that David, there have been several posts regarding HG failure on the 2.4 over the last few months, if I recall correctly yours is the first 2.2, but that may be because of mileage / age of the older 2.4’s.

Hope the quote for the work is reasonable and all goes well.

If you are unsure about the cost of doing the HG post quote on here and experts can provide advice.. noting ford transit specialists no doubt do a lot of these so may be more competitive on pricing.

Our 2.2’s head gasket recently went, so I know your pain. The cause, in my instance, was the catastrophic failure of the EGR cooler. Charlie

Thanks Ian & Charlie - as with most repairs it is the labour quoted at 15 hours that constitutes 75% of the overall price.

Today was the first day in the Garage so fingers crossed may have her back for the weekend.

Best Wishes

Just to throw another option also. Have you checked to see if the expansion bottle has cracked? 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

I believe the expansion tank has been checked and ruled out but no harm requesting further confirmation. Many Thanks!

Can I ask what garage you used? I'm currently losing coolant on my 2.2 (not much, maybe only a dropping by 1cm on the expansion tank every 100 miles or so).

^^^^^^^^^^
Have a look at your heater valve first, when on hot a faulty one can have a slight leak / drip.

Next place to look is the radiator, nearside from inside the engine bay, you can get a slight leak on the radiator and a tell tale orange / red stain highlighting it.

Both are not expensive or that hard to replace.
