Crankshaft rear oil seal again
Did my clutch a couple months ago and immediately had a engine oil leak from the bell housing.. I should have left well alone I suppose but the kit came with a new seal..
I followed the instructions Re placing the sealant in the required spots but obviously didn't work..
So boxes out again.. I took them out separately this time with Jack's, and the transfare box proved to be a real pain to separate.. I should have removed the input gear before starting to separate the transfare box..
The seal with the leaks clearly visible

The clutch and concentric slave were still OK with no oil contamination..

I had a bit transmission oil dripping as well and I'm pretty certain that was the transfare box input seal was responsible.. The gearbox output seal looked OK..

I may run the engine for a bit when the new seal is fitted before putting the gearbox back on.. ๐Ÿค”

Also when fitting the new seal make sure you tighten the bolts in stages and in the correct order.

Been here a year or more back. Have a search and you might find it (if not Iโ€™ll have a look tonight). For me it came down to the location of where you put the sealant. Follow the workshop manual, not what it says on the seal packaging.

the instructions in the workshop manual were followed to the letter and the seal bolts were torqued to 9.5nm... my leak is not from the ladder joint or the shaft..its the bottom strip of the gasket that is leaking..you can see in the photo its dripping down bothh lower webs...if you look at the photo with the gasket removed you can see the changed colour all along the bottom gasket joint...thats where the oil is escaping...
the seal was fine before I changed it..I just replaced it cause I got it with the clutch kit

Here is the photo with the crank seal removed the leak is from the bottom of the gasket in the area of the two bottom bolts and down each web.. The line of the ladder joint was OK..

1)Make sure your PCV valve system is working correctly so the blow-by escapes though the valve and not the engine seals.
2)The race on the crankshaft is in good condition. Otherwise give it a good clean or use a 1000 grit to remove any sticky matter.
3) Since you are there I would check the out of round with a DTI. Very unlikely it is wrong though.
4) Again, do not add any oil neither to the race nor to the seal an once fitted do not rotate for xx hours.

I have seen some owners to put a bit of RTV all around the seal where the bolts go. Puma 110" SW

I'm inclined to think the same, because in this case the bottom part of the seal appears to be the culprit and I don't really know what else I could have done.. A very thin bead of rtv round the outside edge of the sealing lip.. Along with applying it to the spots indicated in the workshop manual.. Tou can actually see that still adhering to the ladder frame joint in the photo..
I'll be getting it all cleaned off soon then it will be make me mind up time..

Got a couple hours today and fitted the seal.. Fingers crossed this time๐Ÿ™ˆ..
Then got a little bit metal cut out to fashion a locking tool for the flywheel..

All nice and clean and bolts run in to check and make sure there were no hitched when the seal was offered up

One of the seal fitted with the fitting aids that come with it.. The white one ensures the seal slides on to the shaft easily
The yellow one locates the seal by fitting to the flywheel spiggot on the end of the crankshaft and then locates on the back housing of the seal.. To me the bolts pretty much do that anyway..

The biggest help with a transfare box I find is to remove the input gear and reinstall once the box is fitted

Last Post on this thread and a posotive outcome..๐Ÿ‘
I'm happy that the recent work to put right the leaking rear crankshaft oil seal has turned out ok.. No leaks appearing at the bellhousing and I've done close to 400 miles since the work was done..
I did end up using a very thin bead of rtv silicone round the perimeter of the seal lip..
Couldn't see any other option as the last one was leaking along the bottom edge..
That and buying a good quality(wurth) rtv silicone is the only difference between this attempt and the last one..
