That depends in what capacity they are "customers". if you are paying for a "guiding service" then your guide has no responsibility for you or your vehicles other than to guide you and what that entails. You still have your own responsibilities to road users / people / animals etc. The guide is not wholly responsible for you. |

What happened to the days when you could just go and do something without anyone telling you you shouldnt.
If you want to have a day out with a few friends and do a spot of laning then so be it. It is the small minded few in this country which have made us bend over and get totally shafted. |

some interesting replies.
As i said, we (TJ and I) were up this weekend on a laning trip. Some of the lanes we did would of suited my Puma (i dont want to scratch it). TJ and I then thought about a PUMA laning trip and as we talked we wondered if it might not open an opportunity to meet some more of the guys on here. Our thoughts were to use some of the lanes we did this time around that we deemed suitable for the Puma, then go back a do another recce for some more lanes to make sure we had a full days worth. We were going to do the prep work and check RoW, access etc, get to know the routes and make the calls to book some accommodation and a meal so people could effectively just pitch up and having everything already arranged for them. I understand some people , Fekete for example obviously being one, have the ability and time to get out and research their own lanes and good on them. Not everyone has that ability or the time. As much as i love Wales its not local. Whilst i enjoyed the lanes and driving them the first time, and would be prepared to do them again on my recce to find the most suitable non damaging Puma routes, to go back and do them the third time it does start to get expensive, hence the the initial aim as stated to cover the costs specified for the actual trip. If i was doing it commercially, firstly i would be sponsoring the site, secondly i would be adding in a whole host of factors to make it profitable, time, recces, recce costs for fuel, accommodation etc etc. One of the thoughts was that doing a bulk B&B booking would mean cheaper rooms which meant part of the accommodation cost would of been covered by that partial saving over std price anyway. As far as organising and insurance, if i am organising anything i make sure i have TPL regardless of where the event is taking place or what people or doing. In todays world i just believe its a good idea. Drewster you are right, you had the right as much as the Protrax group to be there. They cant stop you following them either. On another topic then why dont we all meet up and go somewhere else for a greenlane trip, find someone to lead each group and then make the shout on the lanes if they aren't suitable for PUMA? This is just musing, it's not aimed at you jst. The issue with organising/navigating with people you don't know is that everyones expectations are generally different. eg I want to drive most of the time rather than mill about, I want to have a couple of short brew stops and a lunch stop, but I don't want to stop at the top of each track and talk about it which many people seem to want to do, or stop and take pic after pic after pic, I find that maddening and a waste of hours when you can do it later or in the pub after the day. I also don't like "green lane speed" ie the slow crawl in low 2nd even on flat gravel. yes of course there are times you need to crawl but if the terrain is fairly flat and the surface good I see no reason to be doing 5mph in low 2nd, I want to rattle along.
The other thing which crops up is that when there are women involved one or two who haven't been before will often want a "proper" loo rather than a pee in the bushes which I find annoying when its being pointed out that we'll be out in the wilds with no access to loos for the day - sorry but don't come if you wont pee in the bushes. i'm happy to state all this prior to organising so its clear to all - I think that's fair enough, if I'm navigating and planning the route, the stops and the timing, I want the trip to be based on my parameters (within reason of course, I'm not a diva). For me that's the trade off - I organise, the trip goes my way. I wouldnt dream of asking for fuel costs or otherwise from anyone, nor would I get TPL when all I'm doing is being the lead vehicle for some people I know on a non-commercial basis. If something happened and someone tried to sue me, a judge would tell them to get stuffed. |

Cheers Mike, i agree with your route and driving time comments! you are there to drive after all.
The point on TPL will always be open for discussion but as you point out - with people you know, i don't know them so therefore i have it! With luck if anything comes of this post some people will step fwd to run some trips and we can go from there. So you'll be offering trips around Waleshire then? YES, I'm still here. I'm a bit peeved that someone has offered to provide a service for a small charge to cover costs and all you've done is make negative comments and state the fact that it's not the way you would do it. So when I asked if you were going to provide a free service of guiding a laning trip around Waleshire you come back with a petty statement.
As I said in an earlier post, you do it for friends only. JST is offering a service for all to attend.
