Measure measure measure. I would make a jig of some sort or weld on a template to the outside that locates the holes and then use it to mount the new ones. Go to a proper bodyshop supplies place and get your paint matched that’s what I do, it will have faded over time and won’t be the same. |

Thanks.
I will get her up and running first before I tackle the mounts. I just happened to stumble across it whilst removing the tanks. Thats the butty of restoring an old car I suppose. Made some good progress today. Question is, do I remove the heads and fit new head gaskets whilst I'm here??? Hmmmm.... The lost grows ever longer. I snapped 2 bolts for the inlet manifold so will try and drill them out tomorrow. Also need 2 new rubber seals for the front and rear of the engine manifold, the kind of half moon shape ones. My 1990 110 is Portofino Red, but very faded.

Well.
The decision to remove the heads was officially taken out of may hands. 2 of the spark plug threads had been stripped previously and are knackered. So what next, second hand heads off eBay or recon mine. This is turning into a nightmare of a job now. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Ah, I've just seen you can get spark plug recap and coil kits.
Any one had any success using these bits of kit? Steve |

It was about 1976 when I last helicoiled a spark plug thread but in essence it's no different to any other thread and the result is stronger and more durable than the original thread. As long as it's done competently it is fine.

I would go to a decent old style machine shop and they would be able to remove your broken studs and helicoil the plug holes at what should be much less than a replacement head.
What part of the country are you? Some of us will know a place we would trust with this work. |

Hi.
Im in Northants. Ive found 2 heads on eBay that are in good condition. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256158539900?mk...name=11050 They are the same number HRC 2479, except mine has 8 underneath and the bay ones have 17. I have load of dodgy exhaust and inlet studs as well so thinking its ether refurb or buy this set. Steve |

Is Rugby far from you?
There is a man that has an impressive amount of machinery that appears to be able to do any engine machine work, including white metal bearings that he did a couple of years back for me. Wards Engineering - I would think he can give you a ball park figure for the jobs on your heads, if you give him a ring. Then you can see how you feel about the price difference. |

No too far.
There is a place in Bedford as well I might try. Ive put an offer in on the heads on eBay. They are in far better condition than mine and all the threads are ok so that's good for a start. Steve |

I would get your own redone, secondhand might not be any better. It’d be about £250 max to get them done.

This is rapidly turning into a full strip down and restoration.
Every time I take something off I find a new problem. What a massive dog egg!!! Still, gives me something to do. On the plus side I’m seeing that there is no rust or corrosion anywhere. The bulkhead is like new. And it’s the original. Found the date stamp on it today. Ripped the dash out, lower half and ac to find more wires of mystery origin connected to modules that may or may not work. Seat belt warning module is in place but doesn’t work. Want to get as much working to factory standard as I can. Might leave the alarm system though. Looks like there is an abs module as well. But wires not connected and hardware not there. Steve. |
