Dinnu is right, not what you want to hear when you've got the dash in a thousand pieces. Consider an upgrade now you have two nozzles - one new one and two halves that can be reunited. You need a t-piece (from Halfords) and a short length of hose.
I fitted a nozzle in each of the redundant holes where the wipers fit on LHD models. The original pump has plenty of flow and the whole windscreen gets water. Just remember to get a grommet for the now redundant centre hole. Also a lot easier to get to to nip up the nut. Tip - put the nut over the pipe, put the pipe on the nozzle = no dropped nuts to grovel for down the back of the dash. Click image to enlarge |

How does it attach then Dinnu? If I push it on, it just springs off immediately?
It looks like a single piece on LRWorkshop: Click image to enlarge I did ponder carefully it was actually broken or in two pieces, and didn't reach a solid conclusion other than it won't go back and stay on. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW Last edited by Hufflepuff on 21st Dec 2022 4:49pm. That is cunning Penfold, thanks the tip! I've put the dash all back together now (badly, ended up with a screw left over...?!)
If there is a quick solution for this weekend's driving by reusing the original one somehow, I'm all up for that. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

Did you get the new nozzle fitted or is the original still in situ?

No I abandoned ship and wrote the job off as a bad 'un - as per the original post I have no idea how to get to the nut on the back of the original nozzle to get it off. 2005 Td5 90 XS

You may need a willing helper and get them to turn the nozzle from the outside while you hold an appropriate spanner on the nut from the inside, only half a turn at a time so you don't twist the pipe too much and then you can spin it off with your fingers from the inside. Be careful with the bit where the pipe attaches, it will be brittle. If you do plan to do what I did (fit two nozzles) and wish to reuse it you might be wise to not try and pull the pipe off. Instead cut the feed hose near where the passenger side nozzle will go, fit your original nozzle here with its pipe still attached, fit the t-peice then run the new pipe across to where the drivers side nozzle will be and fit the new one that side.
When off the vehicle the two halves of your original nozzle will push back together and sit very snugly together. |

Watch this video.. at about 2:40.
But if yours is not holding, maybe it is damaged (check for cracks). I recently needed to paint the bulkhead on my puma, and did not want to mask the windscreen washer... so thought I could separate, and mask just the little part that goes through the bulkhead, but ended up shearing it from inside the bulkhead. The little self tapper was used to pull out the broken remnant. https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u..._4984.jpeg So perhaps there is a range of tolerances for these parts. So if you ask how I changed it, mine is a Puma, and if fairly easy to get to through the center facia. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I've not done this on a TD5 (and on the Puma you can do it through the radio aperture) but usually you'll need a deep socket on the nozzle nut after the pipe's removed.
The (crappy plastic original) nozzle is made in two parts but on neither of the two of mine that failed in this way was it possible to repair them, the first because it got run over before I could recover it and the second just wouldn't stay together. I fitted the Optimill nozzle as part of an holistic squirter upgrade including headlight washers and have never regretted it. |

Could try to glue them together is 'snapping' them together is not working. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Well bother me, I didn't try and hit it on with a rubber hammer Dinnu! Thanks enormously for the video - I will try that tomorrow.
I think the Td5 dash is enclosed at the back so even if I removed front piece I still won't be able to get to it blackwolf. If Dinnu's 'repair' video works for me, I'm sorted in the short term, and I'll schedule in a longer fix when the weather warms up next year. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

If you take the centre console off (the two hidden screws you revealed under the top piece and the two at the bottom. There is a plastic access panel behind the radio which allows access to the washer nozzle. Its only held on with four more screws so not too onerous. The worst bit is the top panel which you have already had off.
I have a spare nozzle if you want one sending? Cheers Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Ah more great information from you thanks Steve!
Thanks also for the offer of the nozzle - but I splashed out on the CIS machined one to replace it. I will tear is all apart again at a future point in time where I can do things without rushing in a lunch break. I'm hoping I can just wallop my old one back on to get me through the Christmas period, as per the video above. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

I cut the bridging plate between the 2 side plates off. It serves very little or no purpose. Nothing will fall off. Your dash/bulkhead will all remain in place. It won't be the end of the world. It won't make a scrap of difference to climate change.
If you're really anal about this sort of thing though, you can always make up a replacement plate that either pop rivets or screws on. |
