It is a standard airbox and i didn't seal up any of the 'drainage' if that's what you're asking.
Here's what it did. Click image to enlarge |

I have the RAI, with forward facing intake on my tdci, and I have been in some very heavy rain, and 'deep water' where the tyres create a huge splash forward, that end up on the windscreen (yes, with a few scary seconds were you cannot see anything).. and never had this problem.
Is that the genuine air filter? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Yes, it is more like a mesh than a sponge, like a wooly layer, about 1cm thick, and then the paper element.
When installed, the wooly layer is on the underside. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Looking at the pipe from the the Airbox to the turbo it looks like your engine ingested quite a lot of filter material. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Apparently, that was pretty much it and didn't damage the MAF sensor. Cleaned it up and changed a new filter and it was running again. There were bits that blocked the MAF sensor which sent the car into limp mode (which i think was a good thing).

Mine did exactly the same, sucked paper from the filter into the turbo inlet and jammed it up!
It was like someone had thrown a rock through wet paper. Big hole through the filter. Click image to enlarge Thankfully the garage cleared it out with no long term damage, but was a close call! Had even ordered a replacement turbo. |
