Whilst not surprised as Ineos are an international business with an international client base, I would have thought that France would be a pointless place to build a new vehicle.
The reason I say that is the unions have far too much power. I might sound good on paper but the reality could bite in the future. No point speculating until the ink is dry.... |

Well, I've had two vehicles out of that factory over the years, and they were both pretty well built. Nothing fell off and no regular trips to main dealers after collection to put right production line issues.

It never made any sense, building such a large chassis frame in Portugal, then shipping it to the UK for the vehicle assembly.
You won't get many chassis' on a wagon, making the transport cost per item very expensive. They aren't building enough to make it worthwhile sending a ship full. Then there's the supply risk of shipping across multiple borders and outside the EU, when you really want a 'just in time' delivery. I'm not surprised, but very disappointed by the news. |

If they end up building outside the UK then it puts it back in the Hilux /Dmax/Navara/Amarok zone. It won't make any difference to the vehicle itself but the psychology of the buying decision will alter against it in the minds of many Defender owners, looking for its spiritual successor. That's certainly how it feels to me. It doesn't mean I won't buy one, just that it's lost one significant advantage, particularly if it is priced significantly above its competitors.

But then the iPhone is all American designed in California (but built in China)! JR is a very successful businessman and he will do what is right for his bank balance rather than be influenced by his morals. I expect that if the right sized car manufacturing plant was being closed in the UK, that would be where he would be looking. Trying to build a building from scratch will always be more expensive than re-tooling an existing plant. Bit of a no brainer on his behalf. A real kick in the teeth to Bridgend who are in the process of losing their Ford Engine plant. The other major issue with Bridgend is the M4. It's the only reasonable way in and out of Bridgend and however you feel about road building, if ever there was a road that needed help, this is a good way up the list on needing it. We have friends who live in Bridgend and it can be a real P.I.T.A. if you hit the road at the wrong time or there has been an accident. It's a pain for us, but costs industry millions with trucks and materials / products sitting idle going nowhere for hours on end. |
