I did go for the Khan 20" wheels in the end as I really wanted the bigger brakes, I know the concensus was they look bad, but I'll just have to convince you all there OK as changing will be a real headache....
I did do a budget and genrally it's going to plan however it's the mass of small purchases that are extending the budget, all the things you only find when your in the thick of it. Ran into my first problem tonight, fitting the bulkhead removal bar and it's all going well until I come to fit the off side upright. It's a mile out (>25mm) there is no way any bolts are going in there. This is a pic of the offending side, the near side was already fitted and fits great. Click image to enlarge I'm hoping it's me just being thick but I battled with this for more than 2 hours, tried everything but nothing worked. It's a britpart item bought off ebay. Just a thought - I wonder if the new aluminium strip under the bar (part of the YRM kit to repair the seat belt mountings) would make this sort of difference |

Its surprising what a difference those repair panels make! I am just rebuilding a 90 that I already fitted a Safety Devices full roll cage to many years ago, it already had all the panel cutouts etc but now when fitting the new SD cage on top of the repair panels it can lead to a big misalignment over the length of a long tube. It is Britpart though does depend who made it for them?

Thanks Linds, The new YRM panel is only 3mm thick, but I'm going to remove it and see if it makes a difference, I'm not sure it will but only one way to be sure. I've been onto the supplier and britpart hopefully they have seen this before and it's something I'm doing wrong.
I'll let you know how I get on |

I have fitted one of those bulkhead removal bars, and my problem was slightly different.
In my case, the right bracket that bolts between the slanting part of the forward end of the wheel arch and the capping had the top and bottom flanges not aligned. This gave a problem that either the top flange or the bottom flange cannot fit well. Probably I have to chop of, re align and re weld. The problem is in the 2 top left pictures. The right side (right and bottom picture) was perfect. However the cow horn fitted well. Thanks Dinnu,
I've now removed the YRM parts and it's a little bit better but not a lot. I think I have a similar problem, if I line up the bottom plate on the wheel arch the top is out of alignment, and if I line up the top the bottom is not square to the wheel arch. Hopefully I'll hear from britpart tomorrow. |

Loads of things will sadly not be perfect due to the defender tolerance range I would just crack on and fix it yourself and make a better job of it. I had to do it when i removed the bulkhead on the X tech. Andy

But is supplier is not informed we will keep on getting s**t parts.
It looks like their welding jig in not ok anymore, and if no one informs the supplier, they keep churning out bad parts. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

The problem is all the aftermarket suppliers try to undercut one another which leave precious little profit for the manufacturer. The sad thing is no one seems to care if it doesnt fit properly just relying on the customer to modify/adapt or return for refund. JLR on the other hand want £561.87+VAT per side which is robbery without violence! Have you had a look to see if Safety Devices list them or Protection and Performance?

Now got to the bottom of "bargate" the main bar is at fault. When put on a flat surface there is 10mm difference (measured up from the floor) now this may not sound a lot, but 10mm out at that angle throws out the alighment of the side upright out by more than 50mm at the end.

Well 100% disregard my comment on wheel sizes. It's your project no need to convince anyone, I am sure the result will be a ripper. And after all, it's a LT1 V8, it will need more wheel, more brakes and more rubber. Nice thing about Defenders, is they always look spot on, no matter the flavor. And yours is shaping up to be an absolute beast |

Today happened to take out the bulkhead delete bar. I placed it upside down compared to how mrfirepro measured and pictured. If it was perfect, but nothing is, should rest on 4 points.... mine was rocking a bit, maybe 2mm. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Picked the bulkhead up from Enviro-strip in Birmingham on Friday. Unfortunatley it's got a bit of surface rust from sitting around, I should have picked it up a couple of weeks ago.
Click image to enlarge Got a suprise inspection by puppy quality control, Luckily it passed Click image to enlarge The stripping exposed a couple of small areas where some welding was required. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The bulkhead is Off to the galvanisers on Tuesday, still have to strengthen it before then. Also recieved my stage 2 (quaife ATB) Lt230 from Winchester Gears Click image to enlarge Nearly finished all the work on the tub, just the bulkhead removal bar to sort out. But in the mean time it doubles as a workbench Click image to enlarge Also started the prep on the axles in anticipation of the axle build, this is a coating of bilt Hamber Dydrate 80 to the sand blasted surface, goes black when dry. Click image to enlarge Thanks for your helpful hints and tips so far please keep them coming. |
