Malta 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Santorini Black
Not intending to hack this thread, but have a similar topic question that would welcome any comments on.

My 90, CSW is a bit heavy at the rear, and last 2 MOTs I got feedback from the tester that the rear brake efficiency is a bit low (he had to assist with the handbrake otherwise he would fail it). As I understand, braking force has to be a percentage of axle weight, so being a bit heavier than say a hardtop or pickup, I am penalized a bit.

Calipers although not look in best condition are free, and pistons remarkably clean. My discs need replacement, and will do before next MOT. But I’d like to go the extra mile, and try to increase braking performance with higher friction pads. Has anyone used either the EBC yellow stuff or the LOF power spec? They both seem to have higher coefficient of friction.

I already have a set of mintex, but I think their dot rating is not that high. Also I do not like to replace the pressure regulator yet (as I think is working correctly) if can do with better discs and pads.

I occasionally tow my 2 ton boat, with quite a bit of tongue weight, so extra braking power when towing is welcome.

Thoughts? Pros and cons to my approach?

Edit: I know that the target is not to lock the rear under heavy emergency braking, but I am far from that right now. I do not have ABS. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

You couldn't pay me to put EBC pads in my cars again, I had a set of Green Stuff explode in the caliper of my MINI.

I've been running LOF road spec for a year now and I'm very impressed with them, I tow 3.5 tonnes a fair bit as well.

My understanding is that they shouldn’t be testing Defender on the brake rollers for MOT as it can damage the centre diff. Can anyone confirm this? Also, I don’t like the idea they used the handbrake to enhance the result. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I never used EBC, hence asking, but exploding pads is not something I would like to experience.

Agree, I also do not like it being tested on brake rollers, as you say, due to the center diff. But I do not have much options. I had found one tester that drives the Defender on a test pad, but the tester himself had such a strange personality that I preferred to sacrifice the center diff 😢

Technically they still have to test the hand brake... I warn my current tester every time to go gentle with that, and his reply is always ‘yes I know, I know its a transmission brake’. I think I see the brake lights coming on when he is testing the hand brake.

Btw, as I mentioned earlier that I want to go the extra mile with braking efficiency, actually I want to stop within a mile Rolling with laughter 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I’ve had the opposite experience with EBC;

On my Polo G40 ran EBC Greenstuff pads both F&R with grooved and dimpled discs, very progressive, no exra noise, just quite dusty.

On my SAAB 93 Viggen Coupe have run both Redstuff (Low Dust) and Yellowstuff pads with both GD and just grooved discs on both F&R even with upsized rear disc & caliper combo Twisted Evil Just awesome stopping power, even Redstuff flat out at Thruxton having 2 hours of private tutoring on track, or powing up and down the Klausenpass in Switzerland, where the brakes were smoking hot! Shocked

On my Nissan Patrol SWB Y61 ran Blacktuff (Ultimax) better than OEM both on price and performance

I had only one problem with an older set of front Redstuff pad that were left in the Viggen, they suffered from “rustjacking” where corrosion sets in between the pad material and the steel pad backing, the car had been left outside from October to February, uncovered, unmoved and unprotected, while the Patrol was my daily driver in winter. EBC immediately replaced both F&R sets of pads with a choice of my flavour, DHL’ed next day. Bow down (Can not happen with the newer pads due to addition of "teeth" to the backing pad)

Great customer service and would recommend to anybody, once the pad set in the 110 needs renewing from the LOF set currently, EBC any day. Thumbs Up Zaid-M
