take the fuse box door off and the rubber dash tray out. Then drill a 10mm hole up through the bottom of the dash from inside the fuse compartment. When you put the rubber tray and fuse box door back on it wont show.
It's not a self tapping screw like the others it's a pan head machine screw, maybe 1/4" UNF, and it also has a spacer on it. It doesn't actually screw through the cowling, it's just a locating peg which slots into the hole in the cowl. |

actually the screw is M5 x 16mm part number SE105161L.
I think the spacer sleeve to go over it is LR012460 |

Hello churchy
zsd-puma is right, it's not actually holding the cowling on, if you want access just undo everything else, this is what you then reveal... I guess it's just a possible 'location pin' that may help stop the twisting of the cowl or align the bottom half when being assembled...but it is slightly puzzling when first confronted with it... ![]() Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Fantastic thanks all - speedy response as usual, a part no and a photo!
Had actually begun to drill said access hole......... Will attack in the daylight - question is how can it come loose and disappear - vibration I guess or just standard build quality?! Part ordered from Dan @ duckworth. Never ceases to amaze me this vehicle! |

Hello churchy
My bet is that it might actually be still there... just below the surface, Sleeve and Screw head. If the Screw is 'missing' (and not on the tray below) then the Sleeve would be loose / sliding off / rattling around... Defenders... ![]() https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

I thought that maybe so had carpet out and a good hunt around but it appears its vaporised....or rusted away......
Anyway hole drilled ready for part to arrive from Dan - I feel a bit of discreet black silicone coming on to help secure things. Zsd - what's this about a rubber dash tray!!! Should there be one similar to the passenger side?! Surely that's taking luxury to another level?! |

Just to confirm if I read this thread correctly. The spacer and the screw go in first and act as a locating peg so to speak to the shroud as it goes over.
I take it that the screw does not hold the shroud captive I.e. Spacer, shroud, screw then as it is difficult to access the fixing. Looking at this thread, it seems the screw and spacer is purely a locating fixture and not a securing fixing. And fitted exactly as th eabove picture shows, and the shroud goes over this. Can you confirm? ![]() β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

Okay, thatβs interesting because when I was looking at the Stroud the recess where this fixing would go appeared to be for housing a screw like that keeping the lower half of the cowl captive.
Trouble is, there is very little room in that area to get any tools into. Mine is currently missing, Iβm just wondering how the factory fitted it as the WSM appears to show these items disassembled only. TheThunder Rollsπ¬π§πΊπΈ β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

I found a little bit of interesting info on this whilst looking up info regarding this fixing.
It appears for the 2.4 there was an early 2.4 lower column shroud and a later 2.4 lower shroud. The early part has been superseded. On the diagrams I see a Hex M5 12mm machine screw, and also an M5 16mm pan head machine screw I'm assuming this is the late type. I have the late pan head machine screw and spacer, I am pretty sure I can modify my early shroud lower to suit. This is the difference that I've noticed: Early (now superceeded): ![]() Click image to enlarge Late: ![]() Click image to enlarge Then it moves on to 2.2 with BT Mic, and a 2.2 W/O BT Mic. I'm guessing the 2.2 shrouds don't fit the 2.4? Anyone know? TheThunder Rollsπ¬π§πΊπΈ β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

2.2, certainly late ones, I imagine are shaped differently to accommodate the steering ("yaw") sensors needed for DSC.
I seem to recall the my '07 2.4 has a normal M5 pozi pan screw there which can be removed using a 6mm hex 2pt Pozi bit turned with a 6mm spanner. |

My 10 plate has a securing screw, my 11 plate has a locating lug. Cheers
