I watched the full length of the video and as you say it is a very interesting idea and maybe others will/might start to think this way and could develop uk trailers in some way 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Not sure if talking about the “air ride neck” or the 5th wheel element?
But a pal of mine had this built & uses it in his business, handy bit of kit! Click image to enlarge |

What advantages are there with the type of trailer setup (apart from airbag suspension to smooth the ride out) 1999 Defender TD5 110

5th Wheel attachment point max permitted load is significantly higher than max permitted conventional tow ball load as such the trailer wheels can be much further back, more akin to an agricultural trailer and much better manoeuvrability. The 5th wheel load also applied directly over the back axle aiding load distribution on the towing vehicle.
This set up is extremely popular in North America and Canada where they have pick-ups with real world load carrying capabilities much larger than the 1Te Pick ups we see in Europe. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

I was just thinking about the particular arrangement of the air bags, as opposed to just using air bags per se. Your pal's setup looks interesting - is there not a licencing issue to using such an arrangement in the UK that means it's not going to be used by more than a few people? |

Cheers. How much higher in terms of weight? The USA/Canadian programs I have seen hauling 70's tractor units on trailers. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Surely that trailer can only be 3.5 tonnes gross or possibly 4.0 tonnes if its got c coupled air brakes?

The limit will be the manufacturer's max towed weight and gross train weight for the pickup. It looks like a Navara, so it probably is 3.5 tonnes.
You could in theory go heavier but you'd need a towing vehicle with greater plated weights, and that would take you into HGV territory (you'd need a CE licence, O licence, etc). You have to use couple brakes with a gooseneck, of course, and US-style electric systems are I believe not allowed in the EU/EEC/UK. They'd have to be air. |

So top car guess 1500 kg, bottom car 1650 kg, trailer minimum of 1100 kg, bit overweight?

Unless the Navara's been upgraded and up-plated.

Two, or sometimes three, of these on a trailer will be considerably more than 4 tonnes.
That air suspended trailer will make it difficult to load the third one, or more commonly a SxS ATV, on a platform directly above the gooseneck. If it's any ordinary trailer that drops to only 20,000 lbs. Most large pickup trucks will have options competitive with that. |
