THEY DON'T SEAL THEM FROM NEW!

So water just sits under the rubber! A morning spent with window sealant (get the sticky stuff!) is VERY advisable or get your local fitter to do it for about £50. It stops corrosion and leaks and you can replace any cracking rubbers at the same time Thumbs Up

I replaced the cracking window rubbers on my 4 year old TD5 and discovered the frame had rotted right through Crying or Very sad If any damage is done to the paint work when the window was fitted at the factory it just starts rotting from the get go! You only see it when you take out the rubber. If you discover your frame is badly rotten it's not the end of the world. As with all things Defender it can be easily unbolted and replaced Thumbs Up

Tricky, messy, fiddly job by the way for the practically challenged...some areas are hard to reach and fiddly to get into (under the very bottom of the front window rubber for instance...£50 for someone to do it for you is money well spent.

I know it's disappointing but ultimately a new frame isn't too much of a hassle to sort and if they treat the rust properly rather than just covering it with new top coat paint each time it might be OK - push for a NEW frame, they will need to take the window out to do a proper job and it's likely you will only go back with the same problem in a few months time so it would be better for them to do the right thing and change the frame Thumbs Up

I put a lot of waxoyl inside the bulkhead anywhere, under the seals also.......


So I'm hoping that will be sufficient........

Pardon my ignorance, but are you talking about the bulkhead or the front window frame?

The bulkhead is steel so it can rust, but as far as I can see the window frame does seem to be made of steel nor iron(looks like some sort of alloy?).

Ofourdan I thought the same as it is so soft. I hand drilled mine to put the snorkel on and it was so soft I was convinced it was alloy of some sort but then thought it couldn't be if some are rusting and my TD5 one was definitely steel as it rotted before my eye's Sad

Either way I am going to pick up a spare one for the future Thumbs Up along with other spares and panels if they ever come up cheap....

Just try with a magnet, it's definitely not steel Confused Anyway, alloys can corrode as well, but it's not rust, it's another form of corrosion.

Thats really good news Very Happy another improvement over my 01 TD5 - didn't need to seal the front window but can't hurt. One less rust spot to worry about Thumbs Up Wonder when they brought that in!
