Hey everyone i was just wondering if anyone could tell me how an exhaust manifold might crack as i had to replace my manifold and turbo gasket and the car has done less than 25,000km (15,000mi) only modifications are chip / intercooler + silicone hoses.
Thank you so much and sorry if there are similar posts I just joined this site today and didn't find any similar posts it's the first time i had a problem with my Defender which iv'e had for nearly 6 months now. Last edited by Def-00 on 11th May 2011 10:32pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I think you've answered your own question to be honest. I would be talking to whoever supplied this "chip"

The extra heat generated when the vehicle is 'chipped' will/may cause issues with the exhaust manifold. 130's have feeling's as well you know

Don't mean to revive a dead thread but I think I might have finally found the reason. On my way home I saw a toyota fj stuck in soft sand on the side of the road. The guy driving thought he'd be smart and he'd avoid the traffic on that road. As I was pulling him out a Nissan patrol comes up and stops next to us turned out it was a freind I haven't seen for a while. We got the fj out he drove off and we were going to leave and saw the traffic was due to a police checkpoint 1/2 a km down the road. my friend had aftermarket headers installed onto his car and he thought he'd be stopped and fined. I told him they won't hear the car it was barely audible so he threw his keys to me and told me to drive it since it I said nothing will happen. I got in drove off went through they didn't even look at the car. I didn't really think anything of my friend driving my car as it was just for a dew kms and we'd swap cars again and I didn't think much that he was driving the car way too slowly. Just recently he admitted that he was driving it for approx. 2 kms in low gear ,not sure if the differentials were locked, on the main road before he realized it was in low. I should've punched his lights out. Anyway learnt my lesson I'll never let anyone drive my defender unless I'm in it. Thank god it was replaced under warranty 2012 Fuji White 110 Flattened

Driving in low range shouldn't have caused the manifold to crack... unless he was trying to go 90mph!
In fact, I would have thought if he was in low range, then the engine would have easily pulled the truck along (lower gearing = less work for the engine) so eventhough it might have revved fairly high, it wouldn't have been working hard to get over-hot. I would also get anothe friend... one who will drive his own vehicle through a police checkpoint! Last edited by diesel_jim on 2nd Jul 2011 9:27am. Edited 1 time in total |

Driving in low even with diff in - isnt catastrophic; low certainly isnt a problem, diff can be...but even then it's not fatal, especially in short journeys
I know someone who drove with diff lock engaged for 2 years (disco 2 and box had locked in diff despite the leaver not being) and despite some small issues - it was only when an independant looked at it for something else it was noitced. Of course, driving in low at high speeds eg trying to make the car do 50mph in 6th low - is going to make the car scream a little - like making the car do 90mph is 6th high You mainfold will have warped because of the chip im sure of it Mike Last edited by mse on 2nd Jul 2011 9:54am. Turning engine of too quickly when hot will warp the manifold and cook the uncooled turbo seals and bearings. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Is this due to poor tuning or to be expected with all tuning?

I wouldnt say all tuning, but the sad fact is all original components were designed to operate in x range and tuning takes them to Y range - now a good tune like pete's considers more values and factors, than just dumping in more fuel like a classic chip...but still when tollerances are less to reduce manufacturing costs the impact of a chip potentially is higher (good or bad).
Afterall this is why they automatically void your warranty - you are taking the parts outside their operating scope. Mike |

That's a fair point, but what point can you tune an original car until you run the risk of the parts failing.
Whilst I accept parts failure is almost standarded on a defender does start to make you a little nervous when considering a performance upgrade. I have been looking at the stage 3 upgrade that ALive tuning offer but would question if this is wise whilst still in warrantee. Guess that's only a decision I can make Would changing an intercooler and pipes void entire engine warrantee or just the parts changed, I assume you would just remap back to origanal if you had a problem. |

I personally would keep it 100% standard whilst in warranty - but the reason BAS does the tool to apply and remove the map is to help with this warranty issue. Its your call
There is some scope to change parameters in the car, which is what Alive and BAS do well - because they spend some time developing what they do, they cant however, monitor every production ammendment land rover run parts and map wise Mike |
