I recently renewed my heat shield bracket and ibwas also ecstatic to have finally locate a two year rattle ! It cost less than a tenner to buy and about 6 minutes to fit. Id say get the bits together to install a new one. This protects the brake and clutch system from heat, with out it the heat from the cat(this gets mega hot !) will affect the pipe work and even potentially boil the oil. As said this could prove to have a negative affect in the long term. If not refitting a shiled is the decision then removing the cat will remove a world of heat from under the bonnet. However this is dependant on two things, 1. The vigilance of your regular MOT station 2. The depth of your pocket

I do not know how it is with the Puma, but with the 300Tdi the heatshield protects the starter solenoid from heat radiated from the exhaust manifold. Mine is missing. Under normal circumstances it does not matter, but I have now experienced twice that, when the motor has to work hard, e.g. climbing in the Alps with slow speed and thus no suffient air flow under the bonnet, the solenoid would not work probably due to overheating. Second time was a few days ago, in the que before the petrol station after a very hot day on the German highway. Not very funny! I wish I'd replaced the heatshield after it happened the first time, some years ago after a long climb in the Alps. As long as the engine runs no problem, but if it is switched off you first have to let it cool down, took about 30 min.
Guess what's on the repair list now Cheers, Vincent 1959 Polynorm 1/4 Ton Trailer, Olive Drab Green (sold) 1970 M416 Military Trailer (Camping Trailer Conversion), Epsom Green (sold) 1975 Series III 88 V6, Light Green (sadly sold) 1996 Defender 110 CSW 300 Tdi, Epsom Green (sold) 2000 Freelander 1 TD4 3-drs, Silver (sold) 2006 Freelander 1 TD4 5-drs Facelift Automatic, Tonga Green (sold) MySite |
