United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
Well, there seem to be quite a few folks who're running without the heatshield with no ill-effects, so the honest answer may be "not a lot".

I seriously doubt that there'll be any effect on induction temp, since the turbo's going to get hot regardless of the shield. The main reason for the shielding is to protect the other stuff round the turbo, cat or cat/dpf, and exhaust from the heat produced therein. Worked exceptionally hard, the turbo, cat/dpf can glow red, and this will have an adverse effect on anything close. It is worth noting that the Puma steering shaft differes from the TD5 shaft in that it has a heat shield round the uj near the cat.

So in normal use, or for a short term, I doubt that there'll be any problem. If towing a heavy trailer or similar arduous work, be aware of underbonnet temperatures. It is probably advisable to fit the shield.

Incidentally decatting a Puma dramatically reduces temperatures in that area (and in the driver's footwell) and the shield is almost certainly superfluous on a decatted vehicle.

I recently renewed my heat shield bracket and ibwas also ecstatic to have finally locate a two year rattle ! It cost less than a tenner to buy and about 6 minutes to fit. Id say get the bits together to install a new one. This protects the brake and clutch system from heat, with out it the heat from the cat(this gets mega hot !) will affect the pipe work and even potentially boil the oil. As said this could prove to have a negative affect in the long term. If not refitting a shiled is the decision then removing the cat will remove a world of heat from under the bonnet. However this is dependant on two things, 1. The vigilance of your regular MOT station 2. The depth of your pocket

I do not know how it is with the Puma, but with the 300Tdi the heatshield protects the starter solenoid from heat radiated from the exhaust manifold. Mine is missing. Under normal circumstances it does not matter, but I have now experienced twice that, when the motor has to work hard, e.g. climbing in the Alps with slow speed and thus no suffient air flow under the bonnet, the solenoid would not work probably due to overheating. Second time was a few days ago, in the que before the petrol station after a very hot day on the German highway. Not very funny! I wish I'd replaced the heatshield after it happened the first time, some years ago after a long climb in the Alps. As long as the engine runs no problem, but if it is switched off you first have to let it cool down, took about 30 min.
Guess what's on the repair list now Wink Cheers, Vincent
