Hi 1) rattle: probably the central damper of the friction plate is FU and is not absorbing the input shaft vibration 2) 1st to 2nd: quite common 3) same as 1). Check if the car had the clutch assembly exchaged using the new part. 4) Probably you need to have the crown-pinion adjusted Puma 110" SW ............................................................. I've had a bit of trouble with slack in the transmission, lots of backlash. I've had a new gearbox which made things a lot better, but didn't cure it. Thought it was possibly the diffs but they've been given the OK by the dealer but they've found 'excessive play in the offside rear half shaft and drive flange'. So it's going in on Friday to have that sorted.
I also have the clank when releasing the clutch when stationary occasionally too. Plus a clunk when putting it into gear.... |

Thanks - I will take it to my local dealer and see if he wants to fix it. i bought the car in germany on Dutch papers and imported it to Denmark - so I expect a battle before they will fix it under warranty. Last service on the car was in 2009 - it has been standing still since, so I guess the clutch is original.

Sounds like mine. That what you call backlash is that the same as when engaging second and having your cup of coffe everywhere else than in the cup? If a new gearbox is the solution - I sure hope they will accept it under warranty Regards CRJ |

It did get that bad before the new gearbox. It would also do the same in the higher gears, say if you were coming onto a motorway and going through fourth, fifth and sixth gear. It didn't matter how slowly or gently you changed gear it still sent a big thunk through the cab.
After the new gearbox it was ok for about three hundred miles but then came back, but no where near as bad as it was. I thought that it was possibly slack in the diffs, as it was sorted at the gearbox end, but apparently they're fine. Thats when they found the excessive play in the rear half shaft. Just hoping that once this is replaced it will sort it, I'm getting pretty bored of it going back to the dealers now! The dealer said that a bit of play is normal, but I've been a couple of other Pumas where there's been none... |

If at idle you have a clunk when you dip and release the clutch you will need anew one soon, this will also cure most of the transmission clunk, or you could just wait until the springs fall out Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I'll mention that again when it goes back. Apparently they checked the clutch when they replaced the gearbox and it was fine... hmmmm

Press for a new one the clunk gives it away, first learnt this off andrewS and he was right. Showed the mech the noise and he agreed new clutch, I then drove to scotland before I got booked in and on the way back the springs fell out, drove home with intermittent clutch Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Hi CRJ,
I have all the exact same problems. I recently bought a 110 XS SW 07 plate Puma with 42000 miles. Great car, but the clank I get when I release the clutch is getting beyond irritating. Also feels like I am grinding through the low gears to get them in place. I don't think I should need to drive an agricultural vehicle softly softly. On reading lots of posts on the forum (this is my first post btw!!) it seems the gearboxes are rubbish and clutches are often going. Mine is luckily still under land rover warranty, so am going to take it in to get it sorted. I will be prepared for the "oh well, it's a Defender you know" line. Glad to hear I am not alone with my problems, but sorry to hear you are having issues too. I must say however that I love my car, she's a beauty. Cheers Paul |

Hi
I talked to the dealer today - they are going to have a look at it next week - I will post here about the outcome. About changing gears - especially 1 and 2 , does anyone have a gearbox that changes with ease? Or is a smooth gearshift just not existing on a Puma - mine becomes a bit better when warm. Thought about adding something like Nulon or similar - but not until warranty is out. CRJ |

Make sure the oil is the right one. Most people think a GL-5 is better than GL-4, so get some synth 75W-90, GL-4 oil. Also a faulty clutch does not help to get smooth gear changes. Mustangs drivers also have the same issue, so it is a design problem (it is just a Ford component so do not expect to be superb). I drive a 2009 Defender 11o" It has 38K KM, I bought it 2nd hand with 9000KM from the local Land rover dealer. last week on the way to work I felt the clutch to be spongy. The oficial Land rover Garage had a look and said I would need a new clutch. The garage told me I burned the clutch and the replacement would NOT be under warranty. I am pretty mad at my local dealer because he claimed that the clutch being a component that wares off does not fall under warranty.
But yes, to change gears without any clinks or clongs is impossible in my car. 3rd gear is especially rough with some resistance and crack noise. driving many different models of defenders I think the new ford engine and gears are not the best! especially after paying 900 euros for a new clutch. 2009 Defender 110 SW |

Unfortunately my car was out of warranty, so my local mechanic took a look at the car - it appears that the right gearbox mount is totally done..... I am going to have both fitted new tuesday. The slack in driveline has gotten from bad to worse - but as the car has been standing still for 2 years I suppose the gearboxmount has been letting go after being put to hard use again. Hopefully it will be gone on tuesday...and without me being broke..
