Well it depends how flat the battery is on the failed vehicle. If it's turning over but sluggish then you can normally just connect and crank away. If it's totally flat it'll need the rescue vehicle to charge it for a bit.

Welding cable make good jumper leads, set of good crocodile clips of evil bay or mobile centre and your on your way!
