To be honest, at this stage it could be anything. It's been announced that the interior will be revealed in July and until then everyone is guessing. In that picture though, you can clearly see a couple of large red buttons that are typical of development vehicles, so it's safe to say that that particular one isn't the finished product. Darren

Might be a fridge or something slotted into a multi-use space.

I don't believe the US market carries any penalties or thresholds due to weight (correct me if in wrong). There would be small deficiency penalties tied to resultant lower MPGs. However, these penalties are generally very small in the US under CAFE.

As a general statement, the 4 door variants of the bronco, 4runner and Wrangler are all at or a hair below 5k lbs. It makes sense that this vehicle would weigh more given the size and design drivers. However, an incremental 1000 lbs does seem high.

I think weight might matter, but I'm certainly not an expert at all -- the CAFE standards are very complex and use a "fleet wide footprint" calculation to figure this out; the weight of the vehicle does play into whether a vehicle is classified as a "car" or "light truck", or. "medium" or "heavy duty", and each category has it's own emissions target that makes them OK, but that has to be taken into consideration of the whole fleet (For instance, you can offset HD Diesels with electric cars). I think that is likely to the challenge for Ineos more than the weight - depending on how this thing gets classified, it may or may not hit emissions targets for that category, and Ineos has nothing else in their fleet to offset it.

The magic number on how something is classified is 6,000 lbs, but there is a lot of other criteria, and based on the posted limit the Grenadier comes in at 5814, so they should still be good to be classed as a passenger car or light duty truck in the USA. The only other question is whether the Grenadier meets emissions for that class.

It looks to be an odd place for branding on the vehicle itself ~ you'd have to be knocking a pedestrian off their legs and onto your bonnet for them to see it clearly. So my surmise would be that whatever it is, it's detachable; and the branding works whilst it's away from the vehicle?

Maybe - Jeep have branding in the corners of the windscreen though (tiny little JK shadows climbing mountains) that can't be seen unless you're pretty close, so maybe Grenadier is looking at a similar little "Easter egg" branding on their dash area. I love the idea that it's removable though -- that has some interesting and neat implications.

July will be informative, and I can't wait.

Is it a 1980s CRT portable TV, like you could have won on Bullseye?

Cracking charity to partner with. Such an easy fit and couldn't help notice the video was absolutely stuffed with old Defender footage.

INEOS Automotive partners
with The HALO Trust to develop Grenadier
Hello
We promised to bring you news first. That’s exactly what we’re doing as we reveal our new NGO collaboration.
Announced later, INEOS Automotive will unveil The HALO Trust as a Development Partner. A pivotal relationship to provide Grenadier with real life understanding of what’s needed to make the most rugged, dependable off-road vehicles.
New to The HALO Trust? It’s the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance and weapons disposal organisation, operating in the most remote places on earth. Hear more from Mark Evans and The HALO Trust below.

Great add. As I understand CAFE standards, it is actually to an Automaker's advantage to build larger vehicles. I'm not sure how/if this extends once one gets to the commercial categories. However, I'd be surprised if the general trend did not continue.

For context, (in the USA) we decided to benchmark our fleet mileage thresholds to the size/utility of the vehicle. This allows for larger vehicles to have a lower expected MPG. In turn, all else equal, it provides an incentive for automakers to build larger vehicles because they are held to a lower standard (and pay less in MPG deficiency fines).

There are some interesting pieces that describe this as a/the reason for the "death of the small truck/SUV" in the USA. Vehicle categories (from a MPG expectations standpoint) are in large part driven by vehicle footprint. Small trucks and SUVs are considered similar to cars and held to similarly high MPG standards.
