Hi Tim!
(enjoying reading your blog and hope all is going well now for you! ) The track is tight to be honest, but went for the slim line track and its ok. I looked at getting a gull window but decided the cost and effort as well as loosing the window was not something I wanted to do. But that is what makes the landrover’s all unique ! Hi Clayton
I am leaving the route to Jules as they are the main navigator for the trip, so it will be a surprise when it happens ! I remember reading your write up on your trip so will try and do the same when we get back (plus photos of Poppy in nice places ) Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

Ok, just completed the NC500 and had a fab time.
Weather was wide ranging from snow to full sunshine and blue skies -and Gales to wind less -but cool every day. But no rain during the day time! We free camped all the way round with one night in a pub car park. The route is as quiet as expected this time of year and many of the cafes were closed, but we expected this and had packed enough tea and hot chocolate to cover the gaps. Fuel was readily available and we kept the tank topped up when ever it got half full.. prices were not outrageous compared to the populated areas. Positives - 1-heater gets 10/10 for keeping us toasty warm over night 2- Poppy’s set up worked brilliantly, the pop top was roomy and comfortable, the indoor living space gave us the flexibility to cook and relax in out of the weather, the charging points kept my partners cameras and laptop all charged up ready for use 3- the ability to sleep ‘downstairs’ was used during 2 nights when a couple of gales came in while were in exposed areas .. nice to have this ability to provide rest even in extreme conditions 4- jet boil gave us quick hot drinks when ever we stopped.. but ours has a naff ignition so was a fiddle to light at times - it was reasonable on gas use too which was surprising 5- sand ladder table worked brilliantly giving a place to brew up in lovely areas 6- water tank never ran dry only needed topping up 3 times which we did when the opportunity arose 7- potty was amazing as we used it often! Emptying was done in designated locations with no problem, but we were charged £6 to use a campsite station once! Negative- None really -2weeks slow time was perfect I did manage to loose my coolant cap after having checked the water level and forgetting to put it back on! Tin foil and cable tie got us by till I bought one in Huddersfield on the way home! Now some pics!! Seems that Mongolia is off the cards for a wee while so now looking at an extended Scandinavia trip taking in Lapland Sweden Norway Finland, then Iceland, as well as doing the postponed trip to Albania a day Italy..
But my partner is full of ideas so we will see what the future brings .. along with EU rules and restrictions… Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

Hi Camelman - I lived in the gobi for a year as well with an oil company and the reason I wanted to go back was to show my partner the lovely area arround where i was based - but the recent events in Russia will no doubt curtail any overland crossing into that part of the world.
many thanks for the offer, I may well take you up on that some time in the future. Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

Yep, it would be an interesting route over there at the moment.
I was in the Gobi for maybe half of my time and up in the Taiga forest in the north and the Altai mountains out in the west for the rest of it. |

Sounds like you had a great time on the NC500 Gary. Ideal at this time of yeqr without all the crowds and fairweather campers!
Hoepfully catch up with you and Julia sometime this year. |

Driving up to Aberdeen from Cornwall, (as you do) on my way to work ... pulled in at the Gloucester services on the hottest day of the year 18.07.22 ... A tad warm for the UK, but not as warm as we have seen in Europe - but still a bit of a shock and thank goodness for Air-Con !
