Hi LoLo Glad you have found the post useful! I try to post what works and what dosn't work so as people can learn from my mistakes, and to give people an idea of how to convert their own land rovers. Like you, I have been inspired by others and use ideas from a wide range of sources, then often modify them to suit my needs. You must read a lot, look at a lot of conversions and ask a lot of questions before starting any work on your own vehicle - and then plan to enjoy it ! OK, having had a few funny gear/clutch moments recently, so looks like I will need a new clutch in the near future.
Have done a lot of reading on here to find out what is regarded as the gold standard for an overland defender. From all the wonderful posts, discussions and information available I pondered for a few days before choosing and have now ordered a 'LOF Powerspec' clutch kit and a master cylinder, and then the Ashcroft MT82 output shaft.. So Santa is coming early for Poppy this year ! its booked in for the work to be done at a local independent early next month - so another step on the way for the overland setup ! Any pros or cons to this setup ??? If it were me I'd go with the LOF 1 piece transfer shaft as well.
I've heard mixed reports on the early Ashcroft offering. Good point Jow..
I looked at the LOF one but sadly the LOF shaft is out of stock and no idea when its going to be in ... so had to go with the Ashcroft one as my clutch is about to go and I dont want to be caught out ... Personally I have not heard any negatives about the ashcroft one, but would be interested in what other peoples experiences have been with them ... There was a report of an issue with the early Ashcroft offering but it was corrected. That was a few years ago now. Darren

Fantastic thread Wyvern and great to see the evolution of your pride and joy! I'm just about done with my refurb and am contemplating the pop-top conversion. I see you went to Germany for yours - did you have ex-tec on your shortlist at all? I've been drooling over their kit, but it's a bit pricey and a long way to go and have it fitted!
Regarding the LOF clutch I have the PowerSpec on my TD5 because my truck is stage 2 tuned and I went for the solid mass flywheel option. If I could go back in time I'd change that for their dual mass PowerSpec option because the solid mass is noisy. I was assured it wouldn't be any noisier than a normal clutch except on tickover, but it is definitely noisier when driving and particularly noticeable at motorway revs. Frustrating given the time and effort I spent trying to soundproof the truck - you live and learn! |

Our M82 & Clutchfix hd clutch is going great guns Gary, even with the weight at just over 3T.

I looked at several tops before choosing the x-V-x one - (including the Ex-tec,) they all have pros and cons, and are all around the £6-10k in price. so not a cheap option so dont rush into it. I pondered for over a year before making my choice. TimCat has an Ex-Tec top on Henri and you can read his build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic71382.html The thing that tipped the balance for us was the weight and the low profile, the x-V-x has a slatted bed which is very comfortable, and keeps the overall weight of the top low. Keep an open mind and take a good look at as many the tops as you can in the flesh, so to speak. Look at the seals, fabric, rigidity when up, the bed, the inside head height and the ability to carry weight on the roof. How much standing room is there? Popping over to Germany to have the top fitted was not an issue - we made a nice mini break with the trip and then toured back enjoying the new top on the way. It still worked out cheaper having a week in Germany and getting the top fitted there than buying a similar top in the UK. The bottom line is no matter what you buy, its going to be a life changing event and open a whole new world of landrover camping to you when ever you use it. Looking forward to seeing your progression too ! Ok, update on the clutch front..
Have had the clutch replaced and the old one was in very good condition with no wear and tear, and the springs tight and firm, however there was a small needle bearing that had gone - The Spigot bearing - and had probably caused my issues (photo and more info to follow) Slave cylinder showed some wear but the master cylinder was in good condition. (so will be keeping this as a spare) The MT82 output shaft was reported as an easy fit, but the old one was found to be very loose/ incorrectly fitted so may have contributed to the issues I was experiencing with an inability to select the gears at times. First run will be Cornwall to Aberdeen - so will know how things go then. Here are the photos of the MT82 output shaft and the bits of the Spigot bearing which failed.
The shaft isn’t in too bad a condition but I doubt that I would refit it just because it would be more cost effective to fit a new one. The old clutch has no wear so is in good condition along with the master cylinder, so may keep these as a back up spare when we are traveling. However the slave cylinder worn and sloppy so is not worth keeping as a spare. ok - more shiny bits added to Poppy this week in readiness for our trip round the NC500 next month.
Sandladder mount and air rails added to the side of Poppy today. All supplied by MUD UK - the mount comes from GMB and is very robust but simple. took a while to get it in the right place but very happy with the fit. https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/collections/gmb...g-brackets Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |
