2.4 Puma security / cut off / immobiliser
Hi all

Recently purchased so looking for recommendations for what and how to install a hidden or more obvious security switch.

PM messages probably best... I know there's been a few similar threads before.

I think there's a few issues with simply cutting off the fuel pump etc as the engine shouldn't be run dry but also will be a pain to prime again- stand to be corrected though!

Thanks.

The biggest issue you'll have "cutting off the fuel pump" on a 2.4 Puma is the fact that it's a mechanical pump bolted to the engine!

Eek! Shows how little I know. Shocked

Thought mechanical were a thing of the past... the old 2.25 lightweight I've got has one but assumed newer were electrical!!

Td5 is electric, 2.4 is mechanical, 2.2 has an electric lift pump and mechanical hp pump.

You could fit a manual fuel tap somewhere in the line from the tank to the pump. It'll start but cut out shortly afterwards.

Thanks. Any other electrical immobiliser suggestions?

Hello stuart123

The first question is to Immobilise what... Question

Many say 'Battery' but this may (almost certainly will) be needed when the Vehicle is 'Secured'.
ECU may be possible, PM route is best if someone knows (really knows... how to do this Cool).

Here are two Electrical Immobiliser approaches... To prevent the operation of the Starter Motor
Therefore maintaining the Puma Alarm / ECU / Central Locking / Permanent Live feeds (to possible Tracker)

1. Isolation Switch fitted to interrupt the Main 12V (high Amps) Feed to the Starter Motor
Example Durite 0-605-20 fitted in chosen location
2 Removable keys
ON and OFF positions.
10mm Terminal Studs.
100A @ 24V, 500A for 5 Secs.

2. Isolation Switch to interrupt the S Terminal (Trigger) 12V (low Amps) Feed to the Starter Motor
Under Drivers Seat, identify the Starter Relay (No.3)
At this Relay identify the Trigger Wire (2.5mm2 Brown / Green Wire
Interrupt this and fit a Switch / 12V (low Amp) in chosen location.

I like that idea Skip, fairly simple to execute too. Thanks for the detail. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

I'm interested in this for my 2.4 Puma also and have found a lack of discussion online for obvious reasons.

I like the idea of interrupting the low power starter circuit but can't the vehicle simply be bump started?

How are the 2.4's stopped when the ignition is switched off and can this circuit be used? I've thought about interrupting power to injectors but need to think of a way to doing this without showing signs of mods which could lead a thief to cause.

The other thing I've been thinking about is to add a voltage to where it shouldn't be (rather than to interrupt a voltage from getting to where it should be). For example, make the injectors live permanently, to interfere with fuelling and stop it from running if an attempt is made to start without removing the supply fed from a hidden switch.

It looks like the modern thief is well able to bypass normal security measures and get ecu's to tell the vehicle to start and perhaps some alternative thinking may make it harder for them?

just disable the feed to the engine ECU. It's probably better than disabling the starter, as if they're cranking away with the starter it makes noise.
Plenty of places to hide the switch.

It's a loose inline fuse bound up in the wiring harness under the drivers seat i believe.
