Electrics advice - extra fusebox +
I currently have a 2nd tracker wired directly to the battery. I'd like to fit some extra USB sockets to the centre console. All nice and easy if I just wire to the battery again, but well aware that's a but crap. Especially if something is left plugged in!

I'd like to be able to fit an extra fuse box, probably under the cubby or in the battery compartment. It would only need space for 4 or 5 fuses, but would also like some sort of relay so that it's only live when the engine's running.

All nice and easy from an electrical perspective, but does anyone know of such a thing 'off the shelf'? I'm comfortable doing electrical work, it's just caution about flat batteries and being clueless about every other part of a Land Rover.

I put a 2nd fuse box in battery compartment, then ran a 7 core trailer cable to the dashboard. Each outlet of the fusebox (I think mines a 12 way) has a separate colour wire going to dash to feed auxiliaries, when i want one of the wires live I just put the corresponding fuse in.
You could intercept the +ve from the battery to aux fusebox with a relay that only operates when you turn the ignition on, Tee into a switched live to operate the relay.
If you are wiring up the tracker, this will need to be a permanent live though wont it?

Thanks for the quick reply.
The tracker has a battery, so shouldn't need a permanent live. To be honest, it's a sacrificial tracker that's easy to find to divert attention from 'other security features' Wink

Is it possible to just have a relay that switches on at 14V so that it automatically comes on when the battery is charging? I'm sure I've seen dual battery setups that work like that.

You're now looking at the dual battery charging, I'm sure there is a relay that you could use, i'll have to leave that to the experts though Wink

If you look on ebay you can find fuse boxs that take 1 feed and bleed it off into many fused feeds, if your total usage is under 30A then get a std relay and wire it from the battery to the fusebox and wire the trigger to a switched live on the vehicle then that entire fusebox is wired to a switched live.

i have 2 fuseboxs in mine constant live through a midi fuse and a switched live through a relay to run accessories.

Bit hard to explain but theres pleanty of info on the web and its easily doable in the defender.

Hello AMBxx

I fitted one of the Blue Sea Fuse Boxes, (from Mudstuff) well made
and for a simple few extra 'properly' wired accessories OK

That looks really neat and very simple to wire in. Downside being that there's no way to turn it off when the ignition's off. Might have to live without that bit.
thanks.

Big thank you to all for help on this. I finally took the plunge today.

I bought one of these: https://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/index.php?m...ts_id=1148
and one of these nifty gadgets to only switch on when the engine is running: http://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/index.php?ma...tfvtn2grm4

I wanted to keep the area around the battery clear for the other rubbish I keep in there, so routed a wire from the battery to the compartment underneath the driver's seat. I realise I could have cut into an existing wire, but was concerened about warranty issues (and breaking things).

Now I have a USB socket in the back of my mudstuff safe and the tracker is now properly wired into the new fusebox and hidden way properly.
Earthing went better than expected - for the USB, turned out that the screws bolting the safe in were earthed. For the rest, I used one of the bolts under the driver's seat.
Only mistake I made was not realising the voltage switching gizmo needed to be earthed.

While I had my tools out, I finally got round to fitting the 2nd row door extenders so easier to get big stuff into the back seat. I bought them 18 months ago, so about time!

Thanks again, I now feel much more comfortable in carrying out other electrical work (I have 2 spare fuses to do something with).

I would not advise using that voltage based relay, it will fail and leave you with a dead battery because of how damp defenders can get..

Instead you should use a normal relay and activate it from an ignition controlled positive feed, like the cigarette socket. Thumbs Up

Hmm, didn't know about that. There's not much load on it though and it's in a sealed bag with the rest of the fuses. My tracker monitors voltage, so I should see if there's a problem.
Thanks for the advice though.
