On a personal note when you do any decent wading there is a small chance you may get in a few inches deeper than you expect (having walked the route with a stick first of course
![]() Couple of thoughts - check air tightness of snorkel by covering it up and stalling the engine, and; if you have ARB lockers with externally fitted compressor then you may want to fit a pipe to the compressor inlet too. |

On a Td5 you can stall the engine by putting the hand on the snorkel, done this a lot of times while testing airtightness on fresh installed snorkels....
...on the first Puma it nearly broke my hand! WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

Remember even if you go deeper than the top of the bonnet the water underneath remains much lower unless you stop (yes there is splashing)
Personally I don't think beyond the height point in the bonnet...never had any other need in any other LR Mike |

we produce 3 different types of 100% waterproof snorkels. 1 each Tdi, Td5 or Puma.
A standard LR or Mantec snorkel is hard to get airtight but with a lot of silicone and GAFFA Tape do a pretty good job. WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

AndrewS did a post on how to seal the Mantec snorkel.
Basically as nakatanenga said - lots of sealant and gaffa ![]() If you want to do a really thorough job, you need to take the pipework out from the airbox to the snorkel and replace it. If you look at the D4x4 forum, they're doing a post (referenced here somewhere too) on a no-holds barred expedition upgrade on a Defender. They fit a Mantec but properly seal it. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Yep Safari for me too.
BTW - I get the point made by Mike that the bow wave under the bonnet should produce a lower wave than the front of the car BUT - what if you have to stop or reverse out, you can't keep a constant speed or you hit a large underwater object that slows you down? £10 of plastic pipe and a Saturady morning means that I can choose to go across a ford (ie not a nice tarmac'd road) with some confidence in the knowledge that the only thing saving my diff/gearbox from getting water in it is forward speed and luck. At the end of the day we all make choices - and some of them are personal - so can't argue with that - based on intended use. Me, well I may go slighly over the top in some areas - but where I'm planning to go there is no AA |

You can ford a Puma without a snorkel - just can be a bit 'brown trouserish'
