Sunny Christmas walk with the old boy on the Plain near Larkhill - we've also been lucky enough to be able to shoot with our local syndicate in Tier 3: -

Springers are a wonderful breed if you commit fully. I grew up with them but only managed to get one for myself in my 40s. My top tips: Plan for a significant commitment to training - springers are working dogs and demand mental stimulation so training comprehensively whilst malleable ticks important boxes; keeping them busy, occupied and building the foundations of obedience. They are known to be a very biddable breed and want to be given a job to do, hence them being brilliant gun dogs. The downside is if they are understimulated they can become self-employed and get up to all sorts of mischief. They are thieves so guard your dinner well! Go to a gun dog trainer that's recommended, even if it means travelling a bit. Generic trainers, even well-regarded ones may not focus correctly on the breed and function of the specific dog - this was certainly my experience. Training as a gun dog will not be detrimental to the dogs behaviour in a family setting either - ours is a pet, but during the shooting season works hard and well on shoot days and retrieves shot game took the hand. Do not castrate too early or at all if it can be helped (we were badly advised by vet and then-training company). I could go on for hours but those are my main bits of advice - hope it helps. |

As Thon said, they need a fair amount of exercise. I've had springers for over 30 years. As long as you're prepared to put in some time with them you won't go far wrong. Here's my newest one. Finn 16 months old. Click image to enlarge |

Thanks to you both for the comments, I'll pass them along - are there any standout breeders and what's the going rate for a puppy?
I've been reading lots of stories of prices for all breeds going mad during lockdown. |
