This is also my first as well. He is 3 now. We worked hard on training the basics, but I never taught him to hunt on the basis that I’m sure I could push it later in life, but would struggle to ever bring it back in. In the beating line he is superb, truly exceptional. It’s all in the breeding I know, but he uses his nose more than any other dog I’ve seen, he doesn’t goes blasting through cover for the sake of it, instead working the wind and only entering if there is something there. I can count on one hand the number of times he has entered cover and not flushed.
Picked his first pheasant at about 10 months having only worked on dummies and delivered to hand. That being said, he is far from perfect! He has a habit of retrieving a bird and then when he gets about 10’ away he will stop and cock his leg, bird in mouth, before fetching it on. The lads I shoot with find this very amusing!! He also hates visla’s! Dont ask me why, but he wants to fight them no matter whose they are but is fine with all other breeds! He has no sense of personal space. You can’t go to the toilet without him sitting by the door! Walk out of the shower and he will be there looking at you, if I’m working on the landy he will be sat in it. I would have another one tomorrow! |

Funny you say that, this little one runs like a hound, nose on the ground all the time. She is six months now, not that keen on retrieving but we can work on that. Recall is good, she waits for you to go through a door / gate first (a pet hate (literally) is dogs barging through) and walks to heel despite not doing any heel work - so far so good. She will inevitably become bog off dog as she enters the difficult teenage phase 😂

You are not the first to mention that. Defenders and dogs go hand in hand. The fact you can't fit them in the new one speaks volumes. WARNING.
