Bit more done this weekend, I'm not getting it done as quick due to other LR related problems!
Did the clutch In the 80" last week, then the 90s wipers gave up, so this weekend I managed to get a bit done. Gearbox came out yesterday, cleaned and put back. All seemed good with it, the 44,000 miles appears to be the genuine mileage due to the lack of wear in any of its parts. Shame the original overdrive had been robbed at some point, it's blanking plate on the rear of the box is painted in the duck egg military colour. Wonder why it was removed? It left the factory with it due to having the Fairey sticker on the tub, and genuine B/L sticker on the dash. Still on its genuine exhaust too! I will try to do the rear axle this week, so I can get a rolling chassis for the weekend, then start sorting engine mounts Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge [image]https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/userpics/17422/normal_image~221.jpeg[/img] Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Yes, I would like to but it's finding a good one now?
I'm sure a lot on EBay just go around in circles, and they are selling for daft money. I've got two good units, so if I get desperate I can pinch one just to try. I did think about a Romadrive? Again big money..... I think it's going to need something either way 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I love the look of your S111 the colour with the canvas top is so right for the year. I had 200TDi back in the day with a stainless steel exhaust,K&N air filter and larger intercooler it made the right noises for me and very useable. |

No!
It's going to run standard brakes (for the moment) But it does have the later dual line set up with servo, so I will see how they hold up? I've never had servo brakes on a series motor before, so I am expecting great things... I have run bog standard brakes before and they always seemed to pull them up ok, as you know just keep on top of adjusting them! Once I've finished it, and used it for a while, I may bite the bullet and get Zeus discs up front... 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Starting to look like a Land Rover again!
Put the rear 3.54 diff in yesterday, replaced prop ujs, and slid the rear axle back on the springs. Today, I cut the mounts and the battery tray off the chassis (seemed wrong to do this on a brand new chassis) but hey ho Cleaned up around the old mounts on the chassis, in and out a few times with the engine, and everything is where it should be, ready to weld up I will dig the mig out this week and get them welded in, I would have done it today but didn't have much gas, And Sod's law says that halfway through the job I will run out! i will start to play around with the exhausts in the week, the whole system will be scratch built from front to back. I noticed a few jobs that need sorting on the engine, like manifold studs need replacing, bearings are shot in the water pump, and the odd gasket here and there. It's not been the easiest of jobs to do, I'm doing this one in the garden and not in the luxury of a well sorted workshop! But I am making progress. Plenty to be getting on with.... Good progress Ian, would Richards not supply the chassis minus the battery tray and modded engine mounts?

Andy,
I did try talking to Richards about a special one made to order, They were not interested at the time, and just kept saying how busy they were, and don't need the hassle of doing a one off chassis. I even ended up buying it on account through John Craddock, as that was cheaper than buying direct from Richards! I knew it would have to be cut about, ive managed to keep all the grinding work to a small area, so it's not as bad as I thought I've been having a chat with a company behind us that fabricate gantries, ladders, and railings for water authorities, They have everything galvanised, but also have some nifty liquid zinc that can be brushed on, nothing like the aerosol zinc you can get? so some of that around the mounts should be a good job I managed to sort the L/H mount tonight, so it's all sat where it needs to be now, I will sit the bulkhead on before I weld them on, just to make sure it looks ok. Great to have the engine sat in the chassis 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I had a similar experience with Richards a year or so ago !!!, a non standard chassis was available but at a crippling price!!!
I've used Galvafroid in the past for welding repairs on galvanised bits and bobs with great success... Working towards Carry on camping! |
