I don't think white lettering would last long anyway as clean my defender a couple of times a week at least, I would wash it off 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

For Christmas I got a 3D printer, which I am very excited about! So I have already drawn up a design and it's printing as we speak. It's a replacement ash tray that replaces the one that I have modified to take a permanent Garmin mount.
This is the first CAD design - I quickly went back to the drawing board, however, as I had over engineered it and so the print time was 13 hours Click image to enlarge After a complete redesign this is what I settled on (the hole is for the ambient light sensor for my auto headlights.) Click image to enlarge The redesign took the print time down to 4 hours 50 minutes but as I am impatient I dialled everything up to 11. This resulted in a print time of just over 4 hours and it nearly completed ,but annoyingly failed when the extruder blocked through excessive flow. Click image to enlarge So lesson learned, don't push limits on your first print when you don't know what you're doing This is the current progress of the design. Should be done by morning Click image to enlarge 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

That's brilliant. I've always thought that the ash tray hole was ripe for adapting for a different use. I reckon there'd be a market for a simple replacement just with a hole for a 12v socket in the middle, for sat nav power without being model-specific. Well after yet another redesign (because I cocked up the dimension of the ball) it is done. The quality is ok as a first go. Now I know the concept works I can do it again with higher quality settings.
Not fitted yet but here it is with Garmin attached, light sensor fitted and with the old bodge for comparison Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Looks like you have the same 3D printer as me! I've found 3D printing is both extremely rewarding and extremely frustrating/painful. I too have the impatience problem and a lot of prints have failed because I've rushed the printer.

I tell you what lads, see if you can do something with the bottom vents as I think its just wasted heat going now where. Also sounds like you two need to have a chat about making a few quid together Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

3D printed vent flaps would be difficult because I don't know about you but I'm always banging my knee on them getting in and out and dumping stuff in the footwell and I just don't think you could print something strong enough.
Would need to be injection moulded - maybe next christmas eh grafty?! Matt. '89 90 CSW with a 3.5 V8 conversion (WIP) - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46809.html |
